Yellow Cap Mystery Solved: What a Yellow-Topped Coca-Cola Bottle Really Means for Consumers

(NEXSTAR) – If you spot Coke bottles with yellow caps at certain stores across the nation, don’t be puzzled; it’s not due to a packaging mishap or supply issue.

These yellow-capped bottles are actually a sign that they are kosher for Passover.

While Coca-Cola is generally considered kosher throughout the year, its usual ingredient, high-fructose corn syrup, is not suitable for consumption during Passover. This is because Passover dietary laws are stricter, especially concerning grains that can ferment and become leavened, as explained by Chabad.org. High-fructose corn syrup is derived from corn, which is classified as kitniyot. Kitniyot is a category that includes grains resembling or used similarly to those that produce leavened products, which many Ashkenazi Jews avoid during Passover.
