CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — A U of I fraternity house, a country club and a Chinese restaurant in Champaign all received less than satisfactory health inspections this week.
Champaign Country Club
The Champaign Country Club, located at 1211 S Prospect Ave., received a yellow placard after it was inspected on Oct. 8.
During the routine inspection, five risk factor/intervention violations were discovered and two repeat risk factors were found. These included but were not limited to:
- Shredded lettuce was found held out of refrigeration on the “Gentleman’s Lounge” service line. The person in charge said they were using the lettuce for soup and it was taken out of refrigeration approximately 90 minutes before the inspection. This food is required to be held at 41°F or less and was not.
- This is the fourth consecutive routine inspection that this violation has been documented. This resulted in a yellow placard being posted and a compliance meeting being scheduled.
- The following items were found at the salad bar in the “Gentleman’s Lounge:” Fruit salad including diced cantaloupe (47.1°F), corn salad (46.9°F) and cucumber salad in yogurt (49.1°F). These were also held above the required 41°F threshold.
- This violation falls into the same category as the prior, meaning this was the fourth consecutive inspection this violation had been discovered; leading to the issuance of a yellow placard and scheduled compliance meeting.
- A gallon of chocolate milk was labeled Sept. 28 and was found held past the 7-day use period inside the 1-door upright cooler at the server’s station.
- This was the second consecutive routine inspection this violation was documented.
- A number of areas were deemed to be “soiled,” including but not limited to:
- The ventilation hood filters above the cookline
- The wall behind the cookline
- The floor under the equipment on the cookline
- Ceiling vent covers throughout the kitchen
- The floor under the dish machine
- The ceiling vent cover and ceiling panels in the ware washing area
- The floor of the walk-in freezer in the basement
The compliance meeting for the posting of the yellow placard has been scheduled for Friday at 9:30 a.m. The country club is required to bring their proposed written long-term corrective actions for the food held over 41°F violations to the compliance meeting.
A number of other violations found were categorized as “R1” violations, meaning a further repeat of this type of violation at the next routine inspection would require the completion of a root cause questionnaire and a plan for long term correction.
Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity
During a follow-up inspection on Oct. 8, the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, located at 310 E Gregory Drive in Champaign, received a yellow placard.
No risk factor/intervention violations nor repeat violations were discovered during this inspection, but the fraternity did not return a corrective form by its deadline, resulting in the yellow placard being posted.
A Violation Correction Form was issued during a routine inspection on Sept. 10, and sufficient proof of the correction items on this form were not provided by the original Sept. 24 deadline. After this, a 10-business day extension was given, but proof of correction was once again not received as of the Oct. 8 follow-up inspection.
As a result of this, a yellow placard was posted. And if proof of all the required corrections isn’t received by Oct. 23, the health permit will be suspended by the Champaign County Public Health Department, and a red “closed” placard will be issued to the fraternity.
Cravings
During a re-inspection on Oct. 8, the Chinese restaurant Cravings, located at 603 S Wright Street in Champaign, received a yellow placard after its previous red “closed” placard was removed.
Wednesday’s re-inspection verified that all Priority (P), Priority foundation (Pf) and Core (C) violations from the routine inspection on Sept. 3 and subsequent follow-up inspection on Sept. 18 were corrected.
Cravings’ health permit was reinstated on Oct. 8 at approximately 10:45 a.m. The red placard they received on Sept. 18 was removed and it was replaced with a yellow placard. This inspection result/placard will remain yellow until a follow-up inspection has been completed approximately 10 business days from Wednesday.
This follow-up inspection will further verify the effectiveness of the food safety management system implemented by the restaurant.
