LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — New allegations have resulted in charges against a former Lakeland gymnastics coach who was already on sexual offender probation following a child pornography conviction in 2017.

Detectives with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said they recently learned Alexander Katchalov, 28, had a sexual relationship with one of the young gymnasts he was coaching at Elite World Gymnastics. She was 15 years old at the time.

The investigation began as a missing persons case, when detectives said they were trying to locate the now-adult victim after she failed to participate in a court-ordered detox program.

Investigators said they found her at Katchalov’s home.

The victim told them she used to attend classes at Elite World Gymnastics. She also mentioned having a sexual relationship with Katchalov when he was her coach, the sheriff’s office said.

At first, Katchalov denied their relationship, but detectives said he later admitted to having sexual intercourse with the girl two times when she was 15.

Katchalov spent a little under a year in Florida State Prison after his conviction for possession of a photograph showing the sexual performance of a child. He was released in August 2022, and his probation was set to expire in August 2029.

Katchalov now faces a charge for lewd battery. He was arrested on Wednesday, July 16. Detectives said they also discovered Katchalov had violated his probation by using an unreported messaging system to communicate with the victim in the recent case.

They also found an online gaming account he had not reported. He faces additional charges for failure to comply with sex offender registration and violation of probation.

Officials said the victim in the latest allegations was not a victim in the child porn case. However, Sheriff Grady Judd believes there could be more children who were victimized by Katchalov.

“Given this former gymnastic coach’s deviant background, it is possible that there could be more victims out there,” the sheriff said. “If he has victimized anyone else, we want them to contact our detectives in the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit. He has a horribly twisted attraction to children, and he needs to be locked away.”
