ATLANTA (WRBL) — Introducing new residents to Zoo Atlanta’s African Savanna: a zebra and an ostrich are set to join the diverse mixed-species habitat that offers a glimpse into the wildlife of Africa.

The zoo recently welcomed two new additions: Neighomi, a 2-year-old female plains zebra hailing from a wildlife safari in Winston, Oregon, and Olive, an 11-month-old female ostrich from the Georgia Ostrich Farm. These young animals are currently acclimating to their new environment and are not yet on display for the public.

The introduction of animals in a mixed-species habitat is a careful and gradual process, according to the zoo. It prioritizes the comfort and well-being of each animal as they get accustomed to new companions and surroundings. This approach ensures that Neighomi and Olive will have a smooth transition into their new home.

“The African Savanna is a destination where visitors can experience the interconnectedness of the wildlife of one of the most legendary landscapes on Earth. We are excited to welcome Neighomi and Olive to our savanna animal population,” stated Dr. Gina Ferrie, Vice President of Collections and Conservation at Zoo Atlanta. “As animal wellbeing is always first and foremost for us, Neighomi and Olive also represent important new additions for two social species.”

The African Savanna at Zoo Atlanta is already home to a variety of species, including giraffes, an African lion complex, a rhino habitat, warthogs, meerkats, and others. The addition of Neighomi and Olive is anticipated to offer visitors an even richer experience of this iconic ecosystem.
