Warning: Spoilers Ahead for “Predator: Badlands”
Dan Trachtenberg’s “Predator: Badlands” kicks off with an intense showdown between Dek, the film’s Yautja protagonist, and his elder sibling, Kwei. Although Kwei possesses more experience, Dek’s tenacity shines through as he refuses to surrender, despite taking a beating. This confrontation serves as a preparatory challenge for Dek’s inaugural hunt. Returning to Kwei’s spacecraft, they discuss the grave stakes where failure equates to death. Determined to prove his worth, Dek sets his sights on the formidable Kalisk from the perilous planet Genna, aiming to topple the fiercest creature given his reputation as the clan’s weakest link.
As they regroup, their father Njohrr arrives, reprimanding Kwei for sparing Dek, whom he belittles as frail and insignificant. Njohrr then ensnares Dek, urging Kwei to eliminate him. Just when it seems Kwei might comply, he defies their father, using his blade to liberate Dek and launching a grappling hook to secure his escape. As Kwei attempts to activate his wrist computer to send Dek away, Njohrr intervenes, leading to a brutal duel. Njohrr mercilessly overpowers Kwei, leaving Dek to helplessly witness his brother’s demise. With his final effort, Kwei manages to initiate the ship’s controls.
This gut-wrenching and violent introduction sets a poignant tone, as Dek is left to grapple with the loss of his brother at the hands of their ruthless father. The film thus layers the narrative with emotional depth, as Dek’s journey evolves from self-proving to honoring Kwei’s sacrifice.
Central to Dek’s arc in “Predator: Badlands” is his realization that he is sufficient as he is, without needing validation from the Yautja clan. Ultimately, he establishes his own clan alongside the synthetic Thia (portrayed by Elle Fanning) and the young Kalisk, Bud. Upon returning to Yautja Prime, Dek presents the head of Thia’s fellow synthetic, Tessa (also played by Elle Fanning), as a testament to his Genna conquest. But Njohrr derides him for sparing the Kalisk, branding him a failure and ordering his guards to execute Dek. However, this encounter sees a transformed Dek, now seasoned and battle-hardened from his experiences on Genna.
Dek gets his revenge in Predator: Badlands
A major part of Dek’s journey in “Predator: Badlands” involves him coming to terms with the fact that he’s good enough as he is and doesn’t need to prove anything to his Yautja clan. He ultimately forms his own clan with the synthetic Thia (Elle Fanning) and the young Kalisk Bud. When Dek returns to Yautja Prime, he brings the head of Thia’s fellow synthetic Tessa (also Elle Fanning) as evidence of his kill from Genna. However, Njohrr scolds his son for not killing the Kalisk, mocking him for being a failure and instructing his guards to finish Dek. This is a different Dek, though; a more seasoned and experienced fighter from his time on Genna.
Dek makes quick work of the guards then faces off against his father, using everything he’s learned to avoid his traps. Dek brutalizes Njohrr, who finally recognizes that Dek isn’t as weak as he thought. After what happened to Kwei and his own mistreatment, Dek doesn’t seek nor want his father’s approval anymore, so he kills the elder Yautja. While it appears as if Dek’s story is now complete, there’s another twist in the tale as a new ship arrives in the distance: When asked who it is, Dek reveals that it’s his mother, which should add yet another interesting twist to the ever-growing “Predator” story.
