Its popularity only intensified with subsequent films, merchandise sales, and strategic marketing maneuvers, propelling the franchise into a multi-billion dollar empire. Among its myriad fans was prominent science fiction author Isaac Asimov, whose admiration underscores the saga’s wide-reaching impact.

When “Star Wars” hit theaters in 1977, it didn’t take long for it to become a global sensation. Things only grew from there, and thanks to additional movies, toy sales, and all kinds of excellent marketing, the “Star Wars” franchise ballooned into a multi-billion dollar phenomenon. There’s no doubt that “Star Wars” has been beloved by many, including some of the most important people in science fiction, such as notable author Isaac Asimov.
If you’ve immersed yourself in “Foundation” on Apple TV+, you owe a nod to Asimov, a prolific writer whose influence extends beyond his own work. Although Asimov wasn’t directly involved with “Star Wars,” his legacy is evident within the franchise. The sprawling metropolis of Coruscant draws parallels to Trantor from his “Foundation” series. Asimov frequently voiced his opinions on science fiction, often sharing his thoughts on iconic franchises like “Star Trek” and “Battlestar Galactica” during conventions and interviews.
Asimov’s affection for “Star Wars” began with the inaugural film, which quickly extended to its sequel. During an appearance on Letterman’s show, he humorously lamented the protracted release schedule, remarking that he might not live to see all nine films. Indeed, Asimov passed before the saga’s completion, but he did witness “Return of the Jedi.”
The “Star Wars” phenomenon exemplifies how popular culture can weave into unexpected realms. Asimov, a titan of 20th-century science fiction alongside Arthur C. Clarke and David Brin, cherished a series that, ironically, prioritizes fantasy over scientific accuracy. Perhaps this blend of storytelling and escapism is what he found so captivating.

Much like Neil deGrasse Tyson critiques scientific inaccuracies in media today, Asimov was known for his discerning eye. Yet, “Star Wars” served as a delightful retreat from realism, allowing him and countless others to embrace its rich narrative and characters without dwelling on the mechanics. The franchise invites viewers to suspend disbelief, offering a captivating experience that even a science purist like Asimov could enjoy.
“Star Wars” is a fascinating example of how popular culture can intersect in multiple ways. Here you have one of the most important sci-fi authors of the 20th century, on par with the likes of Arthur C. Clarke and David Brin, and he loved a space franchise that has actual very little to do with science. Perhaps that’s what entertained him about it the most.
Like Neil deGrasse Tyson enjoys doing today, Asimov was critical of improperly depicted science in movies and television. The franchise was probably like an escape for him, as it is for many fans to this day. He likely was able to enjoy it without getting bogged down in the details. “Star Wars” is about the story and characters, focusing far less on the way things work. Viewers are meant to accept what they see as real, and in doing so, they, like Asimov, can get lost in the entertainment.
