By mid-February 2026, the world of cinema has already faced significant losses, with the passing of several beloved actors. Among them was Robert Duvall, a stalwart of Hollywood, whose death felt particularly poignant. Despite being well into his 90s, Duvall remained active in his profession, culminating with two film releases in 2022. His final screen appearances were in the Netflix thriller “The Pale Blue Eye,” marking the end of an illustrious career.

“The Pale Blue Eye,” a film produced by and starring Christian Bale, boasted an impressive ensemble cast, including Duvall, Gillian Anderson, and Toby Jones. However, despite its star-studded lineup, the film didn’t make a significant splash upon its release. Critics received it with moderate enthusiasm, noting its visual effects, which garnered an award nomination, yet it failed to leave a lasting impact. This muted reception is particularly poignant, given it was Duvall’s last performance.

Based on the 2006 novel, “The Pale Blue Eye” transports viewers to the Romantic era, following a detective, played by Bale, unraveling a string of murders at a military academy. Assisting him is a young cadet, Edgar Allan Poe, before he becomes the famed literary figure, portrayed by Harry Melling. Duvall, though only appearing briefly, imbues his character, Jean-Pepe, with considerable weight. His vast knowledge and extensive library become pivotal to solving the case.

This film marked the second collaboration between Bale and Duvall, their first being the 1992 Disney musical “Newsies.” In that film, a teenage Bale starred alongside Duvall, who played the role of the renowned newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer. “Newsies” has since become celebrated as one of the most cherished family films.

Duvall’s role is brief but memorable

There was nearly another opportunity for Duvall and Bale to share the screen between “Newsies” and “The Pale Blue Eye.” The 2013 crime drama “Out of the Furnace,” directed by Scott Cooper, who also helmed “The Pale Blue Eye,” featured Bale but not Duvall. Although Duvall was considered for a part, he ultimately did not join the project.

“The Pale Blue Eye” actually marks the second time that Bale and Duvall appeared in a film together, with the previous being one of the best family movies of all time. That movie was “Newsies,” the 1992 Disney musical that starred a still-teenaged Bale playing opposite Duvall’s version of famed newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer.

Duvall and Bale nearly shared the screen one other time between “Newsies” and “The Pale Blue Eye.” The 2013 crime drama “Out of the Furnace” was directed by Scott Cooper, who would later direct “Eye” for Bale. But only Bale appeared in the previous film. Duvall was sought for a role but ultimately didn’t sign on to the project.
