As “Marshals” reaches its sixth episode, “Yellowstone” enthusiasts are still uncertain about the timeline of the series. The exact number of years since Monica Dutton’s (Kelsey Asbille) passing remained unclear until the latest episode, “Out of the Shadows,” which reveals that a year has transpired since her death. This revelation indicates that at least a year has passed in Taylor Sheridan’s universe since “Yellowstone” concluded, where Monica was last seen alive and well. However, the timeframe since Kayce Dutton relinquished the family ranch remains a mystery.
This revelation unfolds in a heartrending scene where viewers witness the aftermath of Monica’s death. The episode finally delivers the much-anticipated moment from the season’s trailer, where a nurse solemnly covers Monica with a sheet as her devastated husband and son observe. For the first time, the screen provides context with the note that this occurred “a year ago.” This period has been a lengthy and painful journey of mourning for Kayce (Luke Grimes), who acknowledges the need to move forward from his sorrow and the trappings of his widowhood.
The series “Marshals” continues to navigate Kayce’s path through grief, depicting his gradual emergence from the shadows of loss. Since Monica’s passing, Kayce and his son Tate have experienced tension and conflict, but recent episodes show them beginning to mend their once-strong bond. “Marshals” continues to revolve around Kayce’s grieving process as — step by step — he starts to come out of his shell and leave behind his sadness. He and Tate have been prone to fights since Monica died, but they’ve begun to heal their once-close relationship in recent outings. That’s a narrative turn that devotees of the Dutton family celebrated, but “Yellowstone” fans were also furious when a potential love interest for Kayce named Dolly (Ellyn Jameson) was introduced in Episode 4. It felt far too soon for Kayce to be dating no matter how many months have passed since Monica’s death.
Now that audiences know that a year has gone by since Monica died, perhaps they’ll be more welcoming toward a potential girlfriend for Kayce. But until that lady shows up, they’re going to have to accept that one day Kayce’s grief will lift and he’ll fall for a fresh new face, with memories of Monica forever echoing in his mind.
