Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol — What to Know Before Watching the Holiday Film

For fans who remember Johnny Depp’s era of elaborate makeup, exaggerated mannerisms and eccentric character work, his next role may feel familiar. The actor is stepping into the world of Charles Dickens with “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol,” a new take on the beloved holiday tale. But how did this unusual project come together? Looper’s video above explores the story behind Depp’s “Ebenezer.”

Horror filmmaker Ti West directs the movie from a script by Nathaniel Halpern, leading an ensemble cast packed with recognizable talent. “Harry Potter” alum Rupert Grint plays Bob Cratchit, Ebenezer Scrooge’s long-suffering employee, while “Severance” standout Tramell Tillman appears as the Ghost of Christmas Present. Daisy Ridley portrays Clara, and acting icon Sir Ian McKellen takes on the role of Jacob Marley. The film is scheduled to arrive on November 13.

Will Ebenezer be Johnny Depp’s big comeback moment?

Depp’s presence in major Hollywood releases has diminished in recent years following his divorce from Amber Heard, the abuse allegations and the high-profile legal battles that followed. That history gives “Ebenezer” the unmistakable feel of a potential comeback movie, a reading reinforced by the film’s theatrical style and the actor’s heavily transformed appearance.

Physical reinvention has been a defining feature of several of Depp’s most recognizable performances, making a role like Scrooge a logical choice for a return to the spotlight. His long association with unconventional movies also makes Ti West a fitting director; West is best known for the “X” trilogy starring Mia Goth. So far, however, the trailers have not revealed any major twists—unless Depp delivering Scrooge’s familiar “Bah, humbug” is considered one.

At this stage, “Ebenezer” remains an unpredictable entry in Johnny Depp’s career and could either revive his box-office fortunes or fade into the background. Looper has already forecast that Depp’s planned follow-up, the supernatural thriller “Day Drinker,” could rank among 2027’s biggest box-office bombs. Even so, holiday surprises are nothing new, and a successful Johnny Depp comeback would be its own kind of Christmas miracle. Looper’s video above offers a closer look at “Ebenezer” and the story surrounding its production.
