Set in the timeline preceding the events of 2016’s “Rogue One,” “Andor” chronicles the journey of Cassian Andor, portrayed by Diego Luna, as he evolves into a pivotal figure within the Rebel Alliance. Despite its release amidst the buzz surrounding “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and “Ahsoka,” the series defied expectations, even garnering praise from the legendary Obi-Wan himself, Ewan McGregor.

Set before the events of 2016’s “Rogue One,” “Andor” follows Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) as he becomes a crucial member of the Rebel Alliance. Despite debuting between high-profile shows “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and “Ahsoka,” it surpassed everyone’s expectations and even received love from Obi-Wan himself.

McGregor shared that his family often found him engrossed on the couch, engrossed in marathons of “Andor,” and this enthusiasm extended to watching it alongside his four-year-old son. Although “Andor” is perhaps the darkest installment in the “Star Wars” saga, McGregor, ever the stalwart Jedi, is introducing his son to the perils of the Empire and the dark side early on. Indeed, it’s wise to start training young Padawans at an early age.

McGregor’s endorsement of “Andor” isn’t just out of loyalty to the “Star Wars” franchise; the series truly stands out. On Rotten Tomatoes, “Andor” boasts an impressive 96% approval from critics and an 89% audience score. According to a review by Looper, the second season of “Andor” is nearly impeccable, which is quite an achievement given the often polarized opinions of “Star Wars” enthusiasts.

McGregor isn’t alone in his admiration for Cassian Andor’s narrative. Hayden Christensen, known for his role as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in the prequels and “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” is also a fan. In a conversation with Diego Luna for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, Christensen expressed his appreciation for the “much darker and more grounded sort of take” in “Rogue One.” During their chat, Luna was filming “Andor” Season 2, and Christensen eagerly conveyed his anticipation, stating that as a fan, he couldn’t wait to see what unfolds next.

Another Star Wars prequel alum has praise for Andor

Although Tony Gilroy, the showrunner, didn’t initially aim to transform the “Star Wars” universe with “Andor,” he achieved just that. By adding depth and uniting fans, the series restored a missing balance to the Force that many had longed for.

McGregor isn’t the only “Star Wars” alumni who has expressed his appreciation for Cassian Andor’s story, as Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in both the prequel trilogy and “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” revealed he’s a fan too. Speaking to Diego Luna for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, Christensen told Luna that he enjoyed the “much darker and more grounded sort of take” of “Rogue One.” At the time of their conversation, Luna was still filming “Andor” Season 2, and Christensen made his anticipation known stating, “[J]ust as a fan, I’m so excited for it and can’t wait to see what’s next.”

Although showrunner Tony Gilroy didn’t set out to revolutionize “Star Wars” with “Andor,” he did just that. By bringing greater depth to this universe and uniting fans, the series brought a balance to the Force that had been missing for a long, long time.
