Taylor Sheridan, the creative force behind acclaimed series like “Yellowstone,” “Mayor of Kingstown,” and “Landman,” has a distinctive approach when it comes to casting his shows. With the foresight of a maestro, Sheridan handpicks talent ranging from established icons like Billy Bob Thornton and Sam Elliott to surprising choices such as Guy Burnet, known for his role in “Oppenheimer.” He often extends offers for roles directly, presenting opportunities that few actors could turn down, especially given Sheridan’s successful command over the streaming TV landscape in recent years.
Guy Burnet’s involvement in “Landman” as Charlie Newsom during its second season is a tale of serendipity and chance encounters. In a 2025 interview with Taste of Country, Burnet detailed how an unexpected meeting in a boxing gym led to his casting. “We just started talking,” Burnet recalled, “and later, I got a message saying Taylor Sheridan was interested in me.” This chance meeting set the stage for what would become a significant role.
Despite the initial contact, there was a period of radio silence before Burnet again crossed paths with Sheridan in New York. Sheridan’s warm greeting took Burnet by surprise. Recalling the encounter, Burnet said, “He called me his new employee, which caught me off guard.” Sheridan then proceeded to discuss a role with him, likening it to an Indiana Jones type of character.
This candid interaction must have been quite the revelation for Burnet, who was 42 at the time. True to his word, Sheridan promptly followed up, and Burnet was soon cast as a guest star across five episodes in Season 2.
In the fourth episode of the season, titled “Dancing Rainbows,” Burnet’s character, Charlie Newsom, makes his debut. Charlie, a resourceful geologist, soon finds himself entwined with Rebecca Falcone, played by Kayla Wallace. Their initial meeting happens aboard a turbulent flight to Midland, where Charlie helps Rebecca manage her fear of flying with a few drinks. This encounter blossoms into a deeper connection, complicated by Rebecca’s discovery that Charlie is also her colleague at M-Tex, adding layers to their professional and personal dynamic.
Meet Charlie Newsom, Brit geologist and irresistible dreamboat
Introduced in Season 2’s fourth episode, “Dancing Rainbows,” Guy Burnet plays Charlie Newsom, a savvy geologist who also becomes the love interest of series regular Rebecca Falcone (Kayla Wallace). The two meet on a bumpy flight to Midland, as Charlie helps calm Rebecca’s nerves by offering her a few drinks to ease her aerophobia. Naturally, that leads to more after landing, and Rebecca finds herself in a complicated situation with the fella once she learns he’s also her co-worker at M-Tex.
Burnet plays Newsom with a charming, casual coolness, and his fiery back-and-forth with Wallace’s strict and fearless lawyer is plenty of fun to watch — even if it has virtually nothing to do with the main storyline. They have a genuine magnetism toward each other, which, as Burnet continued to explain to Taste of Country, came from a rapport the two developed before shooting together. “Kayla and I built our chemistry before we even started filming. We talked about life, got to know each other. Those passionate kissing moments, you need two people who are game to do this. You’ve also got to like each other to some degree. I think the audience can tell when it’s fake.”
Their turbulent on-screen romance definitely feels authentic. Yet Burnet approached those moments with a deep respect for his co-star, who’s happily married in real life. “She [Wallace] has a very nice and handsome husband who we like very much. You’re also in the character and have to bring that fire to it.” All in all, Burnet joining the stellar (and familiar) cast of “Landman” was a welcome addition to the show’s sophomore season. We’ll (hopefully) see where their love affair goes next year, in an already confirmed Season 3.
