Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Boston Blue” Season 1, Episode 4 — “Rites of Passage”
Sarah Silver, played by Maggie Lawson, might appear to be a natural at handling physical challenges, but she freely admits she’s not exactly the athletic type in her family. During the yahrzeit for her father Ben — a Jewish ritual commemorating the anniversary of a loved one’s passing — Sarah humorously confesses she wasn’t much of a sports star in her youth. Fans of “Psych” will find this particularly entertaining, as Lawson’s alter ego in that series, Juliet O’Hara, was quite the opposite.
In the episode titled “Rites of Passage,” Lena, portrayed by Sonequa Martin-Green, reveals a comical tidbit about Sarah’s younger days. Sarah was so unskilled at soccer that she would bribe her teammates to pretend they were injured just to secure her spot on the field. Otherwise, she’d sulk on the sidelines, yearning for more playtime. Her father, the coach, was patient yet firm, often leaving Sarah out of the game. Unlike Sarah, Juliet rarely faltered when it came to athletic endeavors.
Juliet O’Hara was a formidable character, known for her athletic prowess. Much like Sarah, she possessed a competitive streak and a tendency to take charge, despite her cheerful demeanor. A memorable “Psych” scene showcases her as a choreographer for Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and Burton “Gus” Guster (Dule Hill) as they rehearse for “American Duos.” Juliet transforms into a no-nonsense drill sergeant, demanding excellence and proving her physical dedication.
Juliet’s athleticism shines throughout the series, including an episode where she goes undercover on a roller derby team, fully immersing herself in the sport. Her love for football is evident, and she demonstrates remarkable skill with a bow and arrow. Her agility is unmatched, as she can sprint swiftly and apprehend suspects with ease during the show’s unfolding events.
Juliet O’Hara was much tougher than Sarah
Juliet O’Hara was a tough cookie who could pull off some impressive athletic feats. Like Sarah, she’s competitive and likes to be in charge in spite of her sunny nature — for example, in one of the funniest “Psych”‘ moments, when Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and Burton “Gus” Guster (Dule Hill) practice dancing for their appearance on “American Duos,” Juliet acts as their choreographer. She promptly turns into a drill sergeant, chastising them for failing to take the task seriously while showing she’s physically committed.
There’s also an entire episode where she works undercover on a roller derby team and becomes very deeply involved with the sport, and she loves football as well. Juliet also shows proficiency with a bow and arrow, and demonstrates an ability to run fast and take out a perp at full speed during the course of the show.
While it’s obvious that Sarah has a ton of experience as a police officer and can clearly shoot and run like Juliet, it’s definitely amusing that she’s not quite as proficient as Juliet when it comes to other physical activities. And it clearly proves Maggie Lawson’s range, any way you slice it. No wonder she looks so familiar to “Boston Blue” fans.
