Warning: This article contains spoilers for upcoming episodes of “NCIS” and “NCIS: Origins.”

As Sweeps month approaches, Mark Harmon is set to make a highly anticipated return to his iconic role in “NCIS.” This special appearance will take place during an “NCIS” and “NCIS: Origins” crossover event scheduled for November 11. The storyline revolves around a case that originated in the 1990s during Gibbs’ tenure at Camp Pendleton and will be concluded by the present-day “NCIS” team. Notably, Harmon will feature only in the “Origins” segment of the crossover, so fans should not expect extensive interactions with the current “NCIS” cast. To add a twist, the shows will swap time slots for the crossover, with “Origins” airing first, followed by “NCIS.”

The return of Gibbs has sparked curiosity about his life in Alaska, and “Origins” co-showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal have teased fans with a cryptic update. “We don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say Gibbs is no longer alone,” they revealed in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. Whether this hints at a new romantic interest or perhaps a canine companion remains to be seen.

Since stepping back from his regular role on “NCIS” in 2021, Mark Harmon has maintained a relatively low profile, opting for selective roles in Hollywood. His most recent appearance was as Ryan, the husband of Tess Coleman (played by Jamie Lee Curtis), in “Freakier Friday.”

Despite his reduced on-screen presence as Gibbs, Harmon continues to play an integral role in the “NCIS” universe. His character occasionally appears in “NCIS: Origins,” providing narration and offering Gibbs’ insights on past cases. Additionally, Harmon serves as an executive producer for both “NCIS” and “Origins,” remaining actively involved behind the scenes. He played a significant role in casting Austin Stowell as the young Gibbs, showcasing his enduring commitment to the franchise.

Mark Harmon has remained close to NCIS

Since leaving “NCIS” as a regular in 2021, Mark Harmon has kept a lower profile — but continues to act sparingly in Hollywood. Most recently, he reprised his role as Tess Coleman’s (Jamie Lee Curtis) now-husband, Ryan, in “Freakier Friday.”

But even if he’s largely retired playing Gibbs on-screen, it doesn’t mean Harmon has been far from the “NCIS” world as a whole. His character makes occasional appearances on “NCIS: Origins,” typically narrating and giving Gibbs’ current perspective on a past case. Harmon also works as an executive producer on “NCIS” and “Origins.” He appears to be hands-on behind the scenes, and was heavily involved in the casting of Austin Stowell as Gibbs.

Harmon’s been just as busy on the personal front — his son, Sean and his wife Courtney Prather, recently made him a grandfather with the birth of their son, Cooper Knox Harmon in May. It’s easy to imagine Gibbs approving these kinds of family values.
