Warning: This article contains spoilers for “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2, Episode 1 – “The Northern Star.”
Matt Murdock, portrayed by Charlie Cox, made a triumphant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the gripping first season of “Daredevil: Born Again.” This installment saw Matt wrestling with his past demons while carving out a new future for himself as Daredevil. In its second season, the show intensifies as Daredevil, alongside other New York City heroes, faces off against a formidable adversary in Mayor Wilson Fisk, played by Vincent D’Onofrio. This season also deepens Daredevil’s ties to the broader MCU.
In a thrilling new development, Matthew Lillard joins the cast as Mr. Charles, a CIA operative entangled in the escalating vigilante conflict gripping New York City. From the outset, in the premiere episode, it becomes evident that Mr. Charles may be linked to a rising MCU villain. During a tense discussion between Mayor Fisk and the Attorney General, played by Ty Jones, about the mayor’s stringent measures against vigilantes, a critical moment unfolds. The Attorney General receives a phone call from a mysterious and clearly agitated figure he refers to as “Ms. de Fontaine.”
This name is familiar to MCU enthusiasts, as it belongs to none other than CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, masterfully portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Her last significant appearance involved orchestrating the creation of a villain in 2025’s “Thunderbolts.” Now, it seems she has set her sights on Mayor Fisk’s activities in New York. The coinciding events of her call and Mr. Charles’ arrival suggest potential seismic shifts for Daredevil and his allies, especially given de Fontaine’s dubious track record.
Mr. Charles’ involvement with the CIA during the events of “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2 implies that he is acting under the directives of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, dispatched to New York City with a yet-to-be-revealed agenda. While the season premiere leaves viewers guessing about de Fontaine’s machinations involving Mr. Charles, her storied past within and beyond the MCU offers intriguing clues.
What are Mr. Charles and Fontaine planning?
Mr. Charles is working for the CIA during the events of “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2. Because of that, we have to assume that Valentina Allegra de Fontaine ordered him to head to New York City. The season premiere didn’t give us many hints about what de Fontaine is planning with Mr. Charles, but her history inside and outside the MCU just might.
In the world of Marvel comics, de Fontaine has often played the role of a villain. Like most spy characters, her morality is a shady gray, and she’s always trying to figure out how to benefit herself in any given situation. There’s a weird reason why the MCU’s Fontaine wasn’t a villain when she was first introduced, but she’s definitely been moving in a villainous direction since then. In “Thunderbolts*” Fontaine turned Bob (Lewis Pullman) into a superpowered weapon called The Sentry and tried to kill the titular team. She managed to turn the movie’s main disaster into a PR win by naming the New Avengers, but it’s clear that she’s still looking for a way to get some supercharged muscle under her control.
Mr. Charles seems to be intervening in Mayor Fisk’s campaign against vigilantes, but it’s possible that he’s really just on a recruiting mission for de Fontaine. It’s possible that de Fontaine is going to use the mayor’s efforts to pressure heroes into working for her. Whatever she’s doing, fans can rest assured that it isn’t for the greater good.
