Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Chicago Fire” Season 14 Episode 13 — “Reckoning, Part I,” “Chicago Med” Season 11 Episode 13 “Reckoning, Part II,” and “Chicago P.D.” Season 13 Episode 13 — “Reckoning, Part III.”

In the world of One Chicago crossovers, drama and danger are always on the horizon. While characters often face severe peril or illness, it’s rare for them to meet their demise during these multi-show events. However, the crossover episode titled “Reckoning” takes an unexpected turn. Macy Vasquez, portrayed by Carlita Tucker, tragically dies along with over a hundred passengers on a plane exposed to a hazardous chemical agent.

The decision to kill off Macy is, in part, a narrative choice to propel Stella Kidd’s character development, as explained by “Chicago Fire” showrunner Andrea Newman. Macy’s death is meant to deeply affect her mentor, Stella Kidd, played by Miranda Rae Mayo. “The Girls On Fire program holds a special place in Stella’s heart, and she feels a parental bond with the young women she mentors. This bond even inspired her to consider fostering,” Newman shared with TV Insider. Despite the tragedy, Stella’s resilience will shine as she focuses on supporting others.

Longtime viewers will recall Macy as the inaugural graduate of Stella’s Girls on Fire initiative. Macy’s presence on the show spanned four episodes before her untimely death. Although she is the most notable casualty in the crossover, the storyline is filled with tension and harrowing moments.

Aside from Macy, other characters also suffer from exposure to the chemical, leading to severe health issues. Among them, Capp, played by Randy Flagler, and Joe Cruz, portrayed by Joe Minoso, encounter the substance before the team grasps the full danger. Their exposure results in significant respiratory distress, culminating in a dramatic incident where Cruz loses control of their fire engine, crashing it through a fence and into a field.

Macy wasn’t the only One Chicago character placed in jeopardy during the crossover

Besides Macy, several other characters are exposed to the agent and experience health issues. Capp (Randy Flagler) and Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) are exposed to the chemical before the team understands what it’s dealing with and find themselves hospitalized. They’re so strongly affected by respiratory symptoms that Cruz ends up driving their engine off the road, crashing through a fence, and veering into an open field.

Lizzy Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) must grapple with dire health consequences when the blood of the plane’s sole survivor gets into her eye as she’s treating her in the back of an ambulance. Fortunately, the rest of the agent is discovered and an antidote engineered before any more lives can be lost. But Macy’s death will forever hang over the team, especially Stella, from this point. Everything comes full circle when the fallen fireman’s mother arrives and holds the baby that her daughter had a hand in saving. Life continues to go on, in its bittersweet way, in the OneChi world.
