Season 2 is where the show truly hits its stride, beginning with “The Dundies,” in which Michael forces the Scranton staff to attend his annual awards ceremony at Chili’s. By Season 5, Jim and Pam are happily together, but their relationship faces a difficult test. Pam is rethinking her career and enrolls in a graphic design program in New York City, leaving Jim in Scranton. The two-part premiere, “Weight Loss,” centers on a company-wide effort to shed pounds in exchange for extra vacation days, but the real emotional focus is the distance between Jim and Pam. They spend their days in different states, communicating online as often as possible while Jim struggles with her absence.

Then, on a rainy day, Jim impulsively asks Pam to meet him at a gas station halfway between Scranton and New York City. Seen from a distance through the documentary crew’s cameras, Pam arrives to find Jim waiting beside the pumps. He drops to one knee and pulls a ring from his pocket. The proposal is spontaneous, tender and completely in character — one of the most romantic Jim and Pam moments in the entire series.

Season 3 begins with Jim working at the Stamford branch and Pam trying to rebuild her life in Scranton after breaking up with Roy. When Stamford closes because of Dunder Mifflin budget cuts, Jim returns to Scranton with colleagues Karen Filippelli (Rashida Jones) and Andy Bernard (Ed Helms). By then, however, he is dating Karen.

That arrangement changes during the two-part finale, “The Job.” Michael, Jim and Karen all apply for a corporate position in New York after speaking with CFO David Wallace (Andy Buckley). Jim and Pam’s relationship has already begun shifting: during “Beach Games,” Pam admits that she misses their friendship, while Jim unexpectedly confesses how he feels about her. Karen senses the danger and tells Jim that they have no future together in Scranton, clearly hoping they will both relocate to New York regardless of who gets the job.

The interview process quickly descends into chaos. Michael and Jan are trapped in a deeply unhealthy relationship, and the corporate position turns out to be Jan’s job — one she is about to lose because of her erratic behavior. Jim appears to impress David, but then spots a small gift Pam has left in his sales reports: a medal fashioned from a yogurt lid, a callback to “Office Olympics” and a good-luck gesture. Jim abandons the interview, returns to Scranton and asks Pam out while she is filming a confessional. After Jim proposes in the Season 5 premiere “Weight Loss,” viewers finally see the couple’s wedding in the two-part Season 6 episode “Niagara.” As expected, the ceremony is anything but simple.
