Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Chicago Med” Season 11, Episode 5 — “What’s Hiding in the Dark”

In the gripping episode “What’s Hiding in the Dark,” Hannah Asher, portrayed by Jessy Schram, finds her day taking a challenging turn. Her patient, Jenny Roselle, played by Anna Harriette Pittman, is revealed to have secretly delivered a stillborn child. In a desperate attempt to move on, Jenny buried the child and returned to her college life, a decision fraught with medical risks. Adding to Hannah’s stress is her own unexpected pregnancy, disclosed in the season’s premiere. Despite these personal and professional hurdles, Hannah manages to save Jenny’s life. The situation becomes even more complicated when Kim Burgess, a character from “Chicago P.D.” played by Marina Squerciati, arrives to unravel the complex case.

Detective Kim Burgess informs Hannah that forensic tests indicate Jenny’s baby had died months before the stillbirth, a crucial finding that absolves Jenny of the gravest legal charges. However, Jenny still faces potential legal consequences, and Kim advises Hannah to recommend legal counsel for Jenny. Jenny’s deception during medical treatment, where she falsely claimed menstrual issues instead of addressing post-birth trauma, might negatively impact any legal proceedings.

This episode features an unexpected cameo by Marina Squerciati, a surprise for fans as her appearance was not pre-announced. Detective Kim’s presence is particularly startling given that her partner, Ruzek, portrayed by Patrick John Flueger, is on a break for much of the current “Chicago P.D.” season. Within the story, Hannah is caught off guard by Kim’s involvement, which also leads to tension with her unborn child’s father, Dr. Dean Archer, played by Steven Weber. Unlike Weber’s comedic past on “Wings,” this storyline offers little in the way of humor.

As Hannah and Dean navigate the uncertain waters of co-parenting their future child, they find themselves clashing over key decisions. During Hannah’s first OBGYN appointment, the couple encounters a doctor humorously dressed for Halloween as “the cat who went viral for looking like Eugene Levy.” The visit prompts a disagreement when they are asked if they wish to know the baby’s gender, highlighting their differing perspectives on their shared future.

Hannah is going through her own baby blues during Episode 5

Hannah and Dean are trying to cope with the facts of co-parenting their unborn child, but they’re already butting heads on serious matters. In “What’s Hiding in the Dark,” the pair attend Hannah’s first OBGYN appointment with a gynecologist who is dressed up for Halloween as “the cat who went viral for looking like Eugene Levy.” They’re asked if they want to learn the sex of the baby, but clash over whether they want to know more.

Hannah wants it to be a surprise, while Dean would like to know everything. The ultrasound goes smoothly enough, but they learn that there may be some genetic abnormalities present in the baby. That sets off a disagreement as to how to best approach those heavy possibilities. Hannah states that this is her body and her pregnancy. She’ll make the final decisions regarding her limits when it comes to future procedures.

Later in the day, Hannah and Dean fight over the situation, with Hannah declaring her independence and telling Dean they don’t need to make every single choice together. It’s a series of tough scenes that may remind viewers of Jessy Schram’s powerful pre-“Chicago Med” chops. Meanwhile, will this conflict to a fracture in the couple’s relationship? It will all depend on how much slack the pair are willing to give one another — and how much control each of them will be willing to cede as time goes on.
