The Traitors Host Alan Cumming Turned Down A Terrifying Reality TV Series

Alan Cumming has captured a fresh audience as the charismatic host of “The Traitors,” a role that has become integral to the success of Peacock’s popular reality show. Before taking on this engaging position, Cumming was approached with the chance to lead a considerably more perilous reality series.

“I was once asked to host ‘The World’s Most Dangerous Roads,'” Cumming revealed in an interview with Gold Derby. “The premise was, ‘Alan will drive down this road in India where 30 people died last week.’ That’s when I thought, maybe not.” This wasn’t his only brush with reality TV. “They also invited me to appear on ‘Top Chef’ for promotional purposes, but the timing didn’t work out,” he explained.

Cumming is renowned for his professional demeanor and composure, even when faced with challenges like an intense electrical storm on the set of “The Traitors.” It’s perhaps this calm under pressure that makes him inclined toward a different type of reality show—one that showcases creativity and talent rather than his skills as a host.

If given the chance, Alan Cumming would enjoy being a contestant on a reality show focused on creation rather than competition. “I’d like to be on one of those shows where you make cakes or do crafting. Is there a crafting one?” he pondered in his chat with Gold Derby. “They have ‘The Great British Bake Off,’ and a few of my friends have participated and said it’s hilarious. I’d quite like to do a cooking one.” Considering the show is co-hosted by fellow comedian Noel Fielding and includes celebrity specials, Cumming would be a welcome addition to their culinary adventures. His perspective on these lighter-hearted pursuits aligns with the ethos of the upcoming season of “The Traitors,” which will spotlight everyday people aiming for the top prize, rather than celebrities.

Despite his interest in culinary competitions, Cumming’s schedule remains packed. Whether it’s performing on stage, turning down roles in major franchises like “Harry Potter” for principled reasons, hosting “The Traitors,” or participating in charity events and fashion shoots, his time is in high demand. While he hasn’t yet had the chance to slice into a cake on reality TV, Cumming is more than happy to observe others take the plunge for now.

Alan Cumming knows which reality show he’d love to appear on

Alan Cumming would love to appear on a reality show as a contestant, but instead of cutting throats and manipulating his fellow players, he’d like to create something beautiful. “I think it’d be one of those ones where you make cakes or crafting or something. Is there a crafting one? They have ‘The Great British Bake Off,’” he mused to Gold Derby. “A few of my friends have done that and said it’s hilarious. I’d quite like to do a cooking one.” Since the program is co-hosted by fellow comic Noel Fielding and has included all sorts of celebrities on its “Celebrity Bake-Off,” specials, Cumming would surely be welcomed in that show’s kitchen. That’s the kind of thoughtful sentiment from the actor that explains why “The Traitors” will have a season with no celebrity contestants — the beauty will be in the ordinary people whose lives could be changed by that top prize.

The Emmy-winning Cumming keeps quite the busy agenda, however, so don’t expect to see him elbows-deep in extra reality TV dough anytime soon. When he’s not onstage in a play, acting up a storm (in anything but a “Harry Potter” film, which he rejected for a good reason), or hosting “The Traitors,” he’s appearing in charity benefits or posing for fashion photographers. Perhaps someday he’ll get to plunge a knife into a cake. For now, he seems to be quite content with watching others do the stabbing.
