Nathan Fillion’s gloriously obnoxious Guy Gardner has already become the Green Lantern with the most appearances in the DC Universe. Yet the character has not always worn green. In DC Comics, Gardner briefly wielded the Qwardian Yellow Power Ring, a surprising chapter in his long and turbulent superhero career. The Yellow Power Ring is best known as the weapon of Thaal Sinestro, the iconic DC Comics villain portrayed by Ulrich Thomsen in “Lanterns.” Still, Sinestro was hardly its only user. The history of the Green Lantern Corps is filled with clashes against armies whose rings draw power from different colors of the emotional spectrum. That includes Sinestro’s fear-fueled Sinestro Corps, whose members carry Yellow Power Rings. Guy Gardner never joined their ranks, but he did spend a period using Sinestro’s own ring to pursue his particular brand of (anti)heroics.

A defeat to Hal Jordan prompts Guy Gardner to seek out the Yellow Power Ring

The story leading to Guy Gardner’s time as a Yellow Power Ring wielder began in 1992’s “Green Lantern Vol. 3” #25. Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler in “Lanterns,” had returned to Earth to reclaim his role as the sector’s Green Lantern. Guy was unwilling to step aside, challenging Hal to a winner-takes-all fight. Whoever won would keep the sector, while the loser would leave the Green Lantern Corps.
Taking on Earth’s greatest Green Lantern proved to be a spectacularly bad decision. The self-assured Guy lost everything. Following several failed attempts to restore his heroic identity in the solo series “Guy Gardner Reborn,” he found Sinestro’s ring amid a major battle on Oa. After overpowering the villain’s soul in a contest of willpower, Guy seized control of the formidable weapon.
