Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning appears to be facing its own reckoning at the box office. The legal thriller and biographical drama serves as a companion to Sorkin’s 2010 film, The Social Network, directed by David Fincher. However, the new movie has struggled commercially, and Looper’s video above explores why its box-office performance has fallen short.

The Social Reckoning examines a period when Facebook’s public image suffered a major blow. Its release also comes during a broader period of uncertainty surrounding social media companies and the influential figures who lead them. As a result, the 2026 film occupies a very different cultural and political landscape from its predecessor, which traced the origins of Facebook.
The sequel-like follow-up has not matched The Social Network in critical reception, either. Fincher’s film won three Academy Awards and holds an impressive 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. By comparison, The Social Reckoning currently has a Tomatometer score of 55%. Based on those figures, it also appears unlikely to rival its predecessor during awards season.
