James Tolkan, the versatile actor celebrated for his roles as both a no-nonsense naval officer in “Top Gun” and a stern high school vice principal in “Back to the Future,” has passed away at the age of 94. His passing was confirmed by his booking agent, John Alcantar, on Saturday, noting that Tolkan died peacefully on Thursday in Lake Placid, New York, where he resided. While the brief obituary on the “Back to the Future” website confirmed his peaceful passing, it did not specify the cause of death.

In the iconic “Back to the Future” film, Tolkan brought to life the character of Vice Principal Gerald Strickland. Known for his signature bow tie and piercing glare, Strickland was always on the lookout for mischief at Hill Valley High School, particularly keeping a close eye on Marty McFly, portrayed by Michael J. Fox. With memorable lines like, “You got a real attitude problem, McFly. You’re a slacker. You remind me of your father when he went here. He was a slacker, too,” Tolkan’s performance left a lasting impression on audiences.

Tolkan’s commanding presence was equally notable in “Top Gun,” where he played the role of the authoritative Commander Tom “Stinger” Jardian. In a pivotal scene towards the film’s conclusion, Stinger queries Tom Cruise’s character, Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, about his future aspirations. Maverick confidently declares his intention to return as a Top Gun instructor, a testament to the impact of Tolkan’s character on the storyline.

“You got a real attitude problem, McFly,” Tolkan’s character says in the 1985 film. “You’re a slacker. You remind me of your father when he went here. He was a slacker, too.”

Tolkan also appeared in “Top Gun” as commanding officer Tom “Stinger” Jardian. Near the end of the film, when Jardian asks Tom Cruise’s character, Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, about his choice for future duty, Mitchell replies that he wants to be a Top Gun instructor.

“God help us,” Tolkan’s character replies, laughing.

Born in Calumet, Michigan, Tolkan graduated from high school in Arizona and served in the Navy during the Korean War. He eventually made his way to New York, where he spent a quarter-century acting in theater roles. He was a member of the original ensemble cast of “Glengarry Glen Ross.”

Tolkan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Parmelee Welles, who said in a statement that her husband also was an avid art collector and adored animals.
