Our reporter, Jennifer Oliver O’Connell, provided an in-depth analysis of the recent turmoil at the Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event held at the University of California, Berkeley, this past Monday.
The event, which quickly descended into chaos, saw radical leftist protesters clashing with attendees, even attempting to breach security barriers at the sold-out gathering.
Tensions escalated further during a confrontation involving a participant donning a “Freedom” T-shirt, a nod to Charlie Kirk, as he discussed his faith in Jesus Christ. The altercation culminated in violence and subsequent arrests. Protesters were heard chanting “Chinga la Migra,” a derogatory phrase directed at immigration authorities.
One agitator targeted the man in the red shirt, derogatorily calling him a “white boy,” while others attempted unsuccessfully to intervene as police detained an individual. Authorities managed to maintain control of the situation despite these efforts.
In a statement, Berkeley Police alleged that Jihad Dphrepaulezz, identified as the man in a plaid shirt, forcibly took a chain from the individual wearing the Freedom shirt. During the ensuing scuffle, the victim attempted to retrieve the chain. Dphrepaulezz has since been booked on charges of robbery and battery causing injury.

Then there was this exchange, which started with the agitators harassing an attendee who was wearing Charlie Kirk’s “Freedom” t-shirt and trying to talk about Jesus Christ. It ended in violence and with an arrest. “Chinga la Migra” means basically “F**k the immigration authorities.”

UC Berkeley (Nov. 10) — A far-left extremist stole a conservative man’s necklace & then punched him repeatedly in the face when he tried to take it back outside the TPUSA event. The victim was bloodied, and the leftists racially mocked him for being white.pic.twitter.com/n5aaiU75mG

One of the agitators harassed the guy in the red shirt, calling him “white boy,” as agitators tried to “de-arrest” the other man and pull him away from the police. They were unsuccessful.
The Berkeley Police are now alleging that the man in the plaid shirt, Jihad Dphrepaulezz, took the chain that the Freedom shirt guy had around his neck and that the man was trying to get it back. Police said Dphrepaulezz was booked on suspicion of robbery and battery resulting in injury.
Now Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon has weighed in on the matter, and she’s not happy with how Berkeley handled the matter. Sounds like Berkeley has got a lot of explaining to do. She noted that there had been problems there before.
We saw all of this at Berkeley back in 2017. @UCBerkeley was sued, and settled the case.
The @CivilRights will investigate what happened here, and I see several issues of serious concern regarding campus and local security and Antifa’s ability to operate with impunity in CA. https://t.co/aN7JzouXwl

She warned the university and the City of Berkeley to expect some correspondence coming.
Berkeley: @UCBerkeley and the City of Berkeley should expect some incoming @CivilRights correspondence. And more. In America, we do not allow citizens to be attacked by violent thugs and shrug and turn our backs. Been there, done that, not on our watch.

It didn’t take long. She said the Civil Rights Division was initiating a full investigation, sending letters to the university president and the university police.
Mob assault and thuggish intimidation of attendees exercising their First Amendment rights are unacceptable.
The @CivilRights Division, under @AGPamBondi, is initiating a full investigation into the potential failures at UC Berkeley and any who enabled such violence. pic.twitter.com/k34eClLDyi

The @CivilRights Division, under @AGPamBondi’s leadership, has asked UC Berkeley Police to preserve all records regarding their response to the mob violence at UC Berkeley’s TPUSA event.

She also called on the university and the university police to preserve all records related to the event, and said, “Every American has the right to speak at and attend events without fear.”
