Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell from California’s 14th District is currently under scrutiny following serious allegations of sexual misconduct and assault that surfaced earlier this week.
The gravity of the situation became evident when a wave of fellow Democrats, including prominent figures like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, urged him to exit the California governor’s race. Their calls underscore the severity with which these allegations are being taken.
Interestingly, while these leaders are advocating for his withdrawal from the gubernatorial race, they haven’t demanded his resignation from Congress. This raises questions about the standards being applied and why, if his behavior is deemed “unacceptable” for a gubernatorial candidate, it isn’t similarly unacceptable for a congressional representative.
In response to the allegations, Swalwell has issued a strong denial, even going as far as to release a video statement on Friday. Despite his firm rebuttal, he concedes to having made unspecified “mistakes” in his personal life, matters he claims are between him and his wife.
Swalwell’s remarks suggest he intends to remain in the race, though his concluding comments about spending time with family and friends and promising an update soon hint at possible reconsideration. The unfolding situation leaves many wondering about his next move.
Hear it directly from me. These allegations are flat false. And I will fight them. pic.twitter.com/bQSlCquD1U

That sure sounds like he’s saying he’s staying in the race. Although Swalwell makes a comment at the end about “spending time with his family and friends” and updating people soon, which sounds a bit like he’s considering the question.Â
I suspect that Swalwell will likely drop out by Monday, but we shall see.Â
