THE man accused of the quadruple murder of a Tennessee family has made his first appearance in court.
Austin Drummond, 28, entered a not guilty plea and was issued no bond when he appeared, subdued and dressed in prison garb, via webcam video at his arraignment on Thursday.
Drummond was captured on Tuesday after he had been on the run since July 29, when the James Wilson, 21, Adrianna Williams, 20, Cortney Rose, 38, and Braydon Williams, 15, were found shot to death.
A seven-month-old baby girl who is related to the victims was found abandoned in front of a house in West Tennessee, a county away from where the bodies were discovered in a wooded area.
Thursday morning in the Lake County Courthouse, Judge Andrew Cook entered a not guilty plea on Drummond’s behalf and assigned him a court-appointed attorney because he couldn’t afford a lawyer
The court was told that the state will seek the death penalty in Drummond’s case.
Drummond is being held without bond.
He is charged with four counts of first-degree murder, one count of kidnapping, and five counts of gun charges, officials said.
Drummond is a convicted felon with alleged ties to a violent street gang who is dating Rose’s sister, police said.
His girlfriend lived near the wooded area where the suspect was captured, police said.
Drummond was out on bail on an attempted murder charge at the time of the quadruple murders and living in a pool house after serving 13 years in a cushy prison cell.
The motive in the killings is still a mystery, as well as the reason for Drummond allegedly leaving the baby in a random driveway.
The Dyer County sheriff confirmed the victims are the baby’s parents, grandmother, and teen uncle.
