Bad Bunny’s Bold Super Bowl Halftime Performance Sparks Controversy and Conversation Across America

The National Football League has long seemed indifferent to the sentiments of conservatives and those who hold a deeply patriotic view of America. This perception was only reinforced by the choice of Bad Bunny for the Super Bowl halftime show, which proved to be even more controversial than anticipated.

Criticism of Bad Bunny’s selection was quick to surface, predictably drawing accusations of racism from some quarters. However, the discontent was not primarily about his choice to perform in a language other than English, but rather about the perception of his critical stance towards the United States.

During the performance, Bad Bunny predominantly sang in Spanish, which sparked varied reactions among viewers. At the end of his set, he uttered “God Bless America” in English, but the sentiment behind the phrase seemed to be subject to interpretation.

Fast forward to the performance, which was almost entirely in Spanish . . .

. . . and he ended his performance with 3 words in English, “God Bless America,” but he didn’t mean it the way one might hope he did.

He then listed mostly Latin American countries as performers pranced around holding those flags, then said in Spanish, “The only thing more powerful than hate is love” before spiking a football that had “Together, we are America” written on it. Meaning, together all of these countries are America.

Nope.

My friend, California attorney Laura Powell, elaborated:

Bad Bunny was criticized for refusing to stand for the song “God Bless America” during a Yankees game in October.

During the Super Bowl halftime show today, he said “God Bless America,” but don’t be fooled into thinking this was some kind of conciliatory gesture.

He proceeded to list names of countries in what Spanish speakers consider a single continent called “América,” making it clear that he intended to shift the meaning of the phrase from an expression of patriotism for the United States to praise for mostly Latin American countries.

At least Lady Gaga sang in English.

Anthony Scaramucci, who hasn’t been right about anything, really, continued being wrong.

Former RedState editor Kira Davis nailed it.

And then she nailed it harder.

I’ve heard from two friends so far whose first language was Spanish and they couldn’t understand what Bad Bunny was saying, and it looks like they’re not alone.

President Trump posted about it on Truth Social:

The Super Bowl Halftime Show is absolutely terrible, one of the worst, EVER! It makes no sense, is an affront to the Greatness of America, and doesn’t represent our standards of Success, Creativity, or Excellence. Nobody understands a word this guy is saying, and the dancing is disgusting, especially for young children that are watching from throughout the U.S.A., and all over the World. This “Show” is just a “slap in the face” to our Country, which is setting new standards and records every single day — including the Best Stock Market and 401(k)s in History! There is nothing inspirational about this mess of a Halftime Show and watch, it will get great reviews from the Fake News Media, because they haven’t got a clue of what is going on in the REAL WORLD — And, by the way, the NFL should immediately replace its ridiculous new Kickoff Rule. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Of course, Green Day also performed, as Friend-of-RedState John Ondrasik reminded me.

I know every halftime show can’t be legendary, but maybe we could set the bar just a smidge higher?

Here are a few I particularly enjoyed. First, Prince:

ZZ Top:

Michael Jackson:

U2:

What were your favorite Super Bowl halftime show performances?
