A young beachgoer has been rushed to hospital after he swallowed a bluebottle while going for a dip at a packed-out Bondi Beach in Sydney on Christmas Day.

It’s unclear how the sea creature known for its nasty stingers, came to end up in the 18-year-old man’s mouth, but he made his way back to shore where he was treated by lifeguards and paramedics.

He was then taken by ambulance to St Vincent’s Hospital, but details about his condition are yet to be revealed.

Daily Mail Australia reached out to NSW Ambulance who did not have any further details on the teen’s condition.

Bluebottles are found across Australia and can cause serious pain to those who accidentally get wrapped up in their tentacles.

Most people will know if they’ve been on the receiving end of a bluebottle because their body will come up in large red welts.

While fatalities are very rare, some people can suffer allergy-like symptoms including feeling short of breath.

Those who are stung are advised to place the affected area in hot water and remove any leftover stingers.

The teens Christmas Day emergency came as tens of thousands packed Bondi Beach for the holiday, with sunny skies and warm weather making for an idyllic day on the sand.
