During a Friday appearance on CNN’s “Situation Room,” Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey criticized the Iranian government’s current possession of highly enriched uranium. Booker pointed out that before President Trump’s tenure, Iran’s leader had issued a religious edict, or fatwa, against the development of nuclear weapons. He asserted, “Donald Trump dismantled the progress that had been made.”
Booker elaborated, stating, “Trump is now attempting to regain the position we held before this crisis erupted. However, the damage is substantial. The regime in Iran has become more radical, not less. They continue to possess their highly enriched uranium, and Trump lacks a strategy to eliminate it.”
Reflecting on the situation prior to Trump’s administration, Booker noted, “The Strait of Hormuz was accessible, and a deal was in place where Iran committed to forgoing nuclear weapons. We had monitoring measures such as cameras and inspections to verify their compliance. There was a leader who had issued a fatwa against nuclear armament. Unfortunately, Trump disrupted all of these efforts.”
