Earlier on Saturday, a chilling event took place at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, as an active shooter unleashed violence on campus, tragically resulting in the deaths of two students and injuring nine others. The incident has left the university community in shock and authorities scrambling for answers.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the shooter remains at large, with limited information available about their identity or possible motives. In a bid to capture the perpetrator, officials have released surveillance footage showing the suspect apparently leaving the scene of the crime.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley updated the public, revealing that seven of the injured students are in critical condition and are receiving treatment at Rhode Island Hospital. The shooting, which has deeply shaken the student body, took place within a classroom, creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty on campus.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said that seven of the wounded are in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital, and that all 11 victims were identified as students. The shooting occurred inside a classroom, he also revealed.

EARLIER: Update: 2 Dead, 8 Injured During Active Shooter Event at Brown University; Suspect Still At Large

The suspect looks remarkably calm in the video, considering he may have just brutally ended the lives of at least two people. It boggles the mind. Unfortunately, the footage did not capture a high-quality image of his potential identity:

“It’s of who we believe is the suspect leaving that area walking on Hope Street and taking a right on Waterman. He’s going to be wearing dark clothing. You are not going to be able to see his face,” [Providence Police Deputy Chief] O’Hara said of the video.

The students were in the middle of exam period as the Christmas break approaches:

Brown student Ethan Schenker was studying for final exams in the basement of a campus library when he received a text from the university calling all students to go into lockdown.

“I immediately just called my parents and my brother to let them know I was okay and to make sure my friends were okay,” he told CNN’s Jim Sciutto. “It didn’t seem real. I think that’s what a lot of people experience and that’s what I did.”

It was a nightmare situation, one that has sadly become all too common:

He’s now barricaded in a supply closet with a dozen others. Lights off. Silent. One student having a panic attack.

This is America in 2025. Pray for them.

Student Sophia Holman described the havoc as it unfolded, but praised the first responders:

There’s a lot of chaos and a lot of fear right now, but I think there’s also a lot of trust, trust that they [police] were there as quickly as they were, and that, you know, the medical staff are doing everything that they can for everyone that was injured.

Classrooms have been cleared, and there are over 400 law enforcement agents in the area. However, students have been told to stay in lockdown for the night.

Hopefully, we will know more about this tragic incident in the early morning hours on Sunday, and we’ll be able to report that the suspect has been captured and is behind bars. As a parent with college-age kids, this is the kind of story that breaks my heart to write. I pray for the departed and the wounded. RedState will keep you updated as new developments arise.
