A Nevada resident, Maurice Vanderhall, confessed to police that he had killed his girlfriend after stabbing her 20 times in the face and neck while she was in the process of moving out of their shared condominium.
The victim, 26-year-old Kennedi Oriti, returned to the Clark County condo she shared with her 28-year-old partner, Vanderhall, for a final check to ensure she had all her belongings and to bid farewell. It was during this visit that Vanderhall launched his brutal attack, as detailed in an arrest report obtained by local CBS station KLAS.
According to online court records accessed by Law&Crime, Vanderhall has admitted to the crime and entered a guilty plea on March 17, facing charges of second-degree murder with a deadly weapon.
Henderson Police apprehended Vanderhall on December 2, 2025, following a distress call made around 6:30 p.m. that Tuesday, reporting the stabbing incident. Upon reaching the apartment complex on the 200 block of West Horizon Ridge Parkway, approximately 17 miles southwest of Las Vegas, officers found Oriti with multiple stab wounds to her face and neck, while Vanderhall was discovered drenched in blood, according to the arrest documentation.
A family friend who had been assisting Oriti with the move stated that Oriti had gone back inside the apartment for a final goodbye to Vanderhall. After she failed to return, the friend made several unsuccessful attempts to reach her by phone.
After attacking Oriti, Vanderhall stabbed himself multiple times in the forearm and knee, according to the arrest report. He told investigators that he was attempting to die by suicide and also tried to hang himself inside a closet. Three different knives were found covered in blood inside the condo, including a butcher knife.
Oriti was murdered just five days before her 27th birthday.
“I have so many beautiful memories with Kennedi and my heart breaks knowing she is gone,” a friend posted on Oriti’s online obituary page, while sharing photos of them together on a group trip to Las Vegas at the end of October. “I watched her grow so much. I was and am so proud of her,” the friend said.
Vanderhall is scheduled to be sentenced on May 6.
