The collision happened early on Saturday morning around three miles away from the south-western city of Uyuni.

These buses were travelling on the main road to Colchani, around 10 miles north of the crash site.

Terrifying images showed a bus totally destroyed with half of its windows and body having been ripped off in the collision.

Luggage was also seen scattered on the roadside as people stood around the tragic site in shock.

One of the buses was heading to one of South America’s largest carnivals – in the western city of Oruro – but these people’s celebrations were cut short by this tragic incident.

Police rushed to the scene and local cop commander Wilson Flores revealed the shocking loss after the collision, according to Vision 360.

He said: “We have lost approximately 37 people who are believed to have died and around thirty wounded, whose condition we are still verifying in different hospitals.”

Both bus drivers involved in the deadly road collision were left with injuries.

One is in intensive care in hospital and the other is in a stable condition, the police chief said.

Preliminary police reports have suggested one of the buses invaded another lane before the crash.

Cops added that they tested the bus drivers for alcohol but were awaiting the results.

This has not been the first bus crash to kill dozens of people in Bolivia recently.

At least 30 people were killed when a vehicle plunged into a ravine in February.

The passenger vehicle was said to have lost control while speeding.

15 people were also injured when the bus fell into a half-mile-deep abyss.

This crash happened on a narrow two-way road between the cities of Potosi and Oruro, close to Saturday morning’s collision site.

38 people were also killed in another terrifying crash in December, after a packed bus collided with a lorry in Brazil before bursting into flames.

The coach, carrying 45 passengers, caught on fire after one of its tyres suddenly blew out and sent the motor out of control, horrified witnesses said.

The driver battled to keep it on the road before it ploughed into an oncoming lorry.
