On Thursday, Western Australia Premier Roger Cook declared the state would swiftly implement emergency measures to invoke powers compelling industries to disclose crucial information about fuel supply chains.

This decision grants ministers the authority to demand necessary data from suppliers to prioritize fuel distribution to the areas most in need.

The announcement coincided with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s rare national address concerning the economic repercussions of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Cook highlighted that despite reassurances from major suppliers about the continuity of fuel shipments at expected levels through April, the conflict has disrupted distribution in key regional areas. This disruption has led to shortages affecting some mining and agricultural businesses.

“My priority is to safeguard the interests of Western Australians by ensuring fuel is directed where it’s most critically needed,” Cook stated.

“We have had success in ensuring fuel is reaching our regions, but our efforts are being hampered by not having full visibility of the fuel supply chain.”
