California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, is set to oversee additional monitoring activities as the Department of Justice (DOJ) prepares to deploy election monitors in the state. This move comes ahead of a special election orchestrated by Newsom, scheduled for November 4th.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta has accused former President Donald Trump of sending his own monitors to the state in a bid to undermine confidence in the special election process. This election is focused on Proposition 50, which asks voters to decide on the temporary suspension of the independent redistricting commission.

Bonta expressed concern over Trump’s actions, stating, “He [Trump] is setting a precedent. He is promoting a concept that poses significant risks.” Bonta further suggested that this could be a precursor to more serious challenges during the 2026 midterm elections and possibly beyond.
“They’re not going to be allowed to interfere in ways that the law prohibits,” Bonta, a Democrat, told reporters during a virtual news conference. “We cannot be naive. The Republican Party asked for the U.S. DOJ to come in.”
“He [Trump] is laying the groundwork. He is socializing an idea that is very dangerous,” Bonta added. “All indications, all arrows show that this is a tee-up for something more dangerous in the 2026 midterms — and maybe beyond.”
In response to the news of the state monitors, Harmeet Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, posted on X that she thought it was a joke.
“I thought this was a joke, so I didn’t comment…. But apparently irony is dead …,” Dhillon’s post read.

As my RedState colleague Ward Clark reported on Friday, the DOJ announced it would send in election monitors to New Jersey and California at the request of each state’s Republican Party:
Five counties in California and one in New Jersey are to be under scrutiny in the upcoming 2025 election.
The AP had more:
The Department of Justice is preparing to send federal election observers to California and New Jersey next month, targeting two Democratic states holding off-year elections following requests from state Republican parties.
The DOJ announced Friday that it is planning to monitor polling sites in Passaic County, New Jersey, and five counties in southern and central California: Los Angeles, Orange, Kern, Riverside, and Fresno. The goal, according to the DOJ, is “to ensure transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law.”
“Transparency at the polls translates into faith in the electoral process, and this Department of Justice is committed to upholding the highest standards of election integrity,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement to The Associated Press.

After the news broke, Newsom made it clear he was not happy about it and accused the DOJ of sending in monitors as an attempt to intimidate voters.
“This is a bridge too far,” Newsom claimed on Friday, alleging it was somehow voter “suppression.”
RedState’s Nick Arama reported on Dhillon’s response to Newsom’s temper tantrum, striking the perfect tone.
Lol calm down bro. The @TheJusticeDept under Democrat administrations has sent in federal election observers for decades, and not once did we hear that this was voter intimidation from states such as California. Do you really want to go there? Isn’t transparency a good thing? https://t.co/SsyR8xRu9q

As RedState readers know, if Proposition 50 is approved by voters, it would allow Democrats to proceed with their gerrymandering of the congressional districts in the state, where the map has already been massively altered in order to benefit Democrats.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
