Canada Rainfall: 4 People Missing, Including 2 Children In Flood

Since the weekend of excessive rains that resulted in significant flooding in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, four persons, including two children, have been reported missing.

According to the authorities, all four individuals vanished when their individual automobiles were swept away by floodwaters, according to a story from BBC News.

According to police, of the five passengers in the car, only the two missing youngsters were unable to flee, according to the BBC.

The BBC claims that the two other passengers were saved from their vehicle, and the same is true for the other two people missing—a male and another young person. Due to the emergency weather circumstances, authorities have advised residents from participating in the search for the missing people, the source reported.

Police said this is the heaviest rainfall Nova Scotia has experienced in 50 years, amid three months of rain falling in some areas within the Atlantic region in just 24 hours, according to BBC News.

West of Halifax, the provincial capital of Nova Scotia, in Lunenburg County, there was extensive flooding, according to the Associated Press. Driveways were swept out in the Hammonds Plains area, the same location where 151 homes and businesses were destroyed by wildfires on May 28. According to the AP, Halifax Search and Rescue required boats to save people in the Bedford region.

Over 80,000 people currently live without electricity, according to BBC News, as a result of the “biblical proportions of rain,” as Halifax Mayor Mike Savage put it during a press conference.

Along with the bridges being undermined by the flood damage, other roadways were also washed away.

“We have a scary, significant situation,” Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said of replacing or rebuilding seven bridges at a news conference, per BBC.

He continued, “The property damage to homes… is pretty unimaginable,” estimating that it would take several days for the rains to recede.

“One should not automatically assume that everything is done. This issue is highly fluid, Savage added.

According to a statement from his office, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke to Houston about the floods. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the Canadian government’s commitment to helping Nova Scotians in the next days and weeks as they deal with the floods, according to the statement. He also praised the resilience of Nova Scotians for sticking together during difficult times and being there for one another.

Trudeau also told reporters in Toronto that the federal government “will be there” for Nova Scotia, per Reuters.
