Justin Trudeau is expected to resign as the leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, a move that will set up his ouster as Prime Minister as well. According to the Globe and Mail, Trudeau could announce his departure as soon as Monday in a bid to get ahead of an all-important caucus meeting on Wednesday.

The controversial far-left leader has led his party to the abyss over the last several years, with the Pierre Poilievre-led Conservative projected to win a resounding victory in October’s elections. Once he’s resigned his party position, Trudeau will be replaced as Prime Minister, though the exact timeline is unclear.

The sources stressed that they don’t know definitely when Mr. Trudeau will announce his plans to leave but said they expect it will happen before a key national caucus meeting on Wednesday. The Globe and Mail is not identifying the sources because they were not authorized to discuss internal party matters.

The Liberals will no doubt seek a narrative shift by bringing on a fresh face before voters go to the polls. That seems like a lost cause, though, given just how popular Poilievre has become. He recently gave one of the greatest political speeches in modern history, drawing plaudits from around the world.

Change is coming to Canada. It’s just a matter of time, and that time is October of 2024.

No doubt, the incoming Trump administration is thrilled at the prospect of Trudeau being pushed aside. It would represent a humiliation for one of Donald Trump’s biggest international opponents. More importantly, it could loosen up economic tensions, saving both countries from the possibility of a trade war.

As of now, there are two options for Trudeau’s future. The Liberals could name an interim leader, which would see him stepping down as Prime Minister almost immediately. They could also try to hold a leadership election, which would take months, possibly allowing Trudeau to remain in place until it’s completed. Either way, he’s done for as a political force, and that’s a great thing for Canadians.
