What was Chauncy Glover’s cause of death?

Chauncy Glover, the 39-year-old Emmy-winning news anchor, died on November 5, 2024.

He was found unresponsive in his Los Angeles home early that morning.

Paramedics responded to the scene, with fire department officials pronouncing him dead shortly after midnight.

Following his passing, Chancy’s family released a statement reading: “Chauncy’s compassion and dedication to helping others, especially through the Chauncy Glover Project, changed countless lives and inspired so many young men to pursue their dreams.

“His talent, warmth, and vision left an imprint on everyone who knew him, and the world is dimmer without him.”

On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed the cause of Chauncy’s death, which was determined to be accidental.

The medical examiner’s report stated that Glover’s death resulted from “acute intoxication by the combined effects of chloroethane and methamphetamine”.

Chloroethane, also known as ethyl chloride, is a colourless gas commonly used as a topical anaesthetic for medical procedures and sports injuries.

Previously used in leaded gasoline, the chemical compound is also known for its uses in the production of medicinal drugs, dyes and anaesthetics.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that, when inhaled, chloroethane can cause temporary feelings of drunkenness, whereas higher levels of ingestion can lead to reduced muscle coordination and unconsciousness.

Career achievements

Chauncy joined KCAL News in October 2023, where he co-anchored the five pm and 11 pm newscasts with Pat Harvey, as well as the 8 pm and 10 pm segments with Suzie Suh.

Prior to his role at KCAL, Glover worked at KTRK — ABC’s station in Houston — for eight years, becoming its first Black male main evening anchor.

During his career, Chauncy earned three Emmy awards, including one for his coverage of Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

He had previous stints at stations in Columbus (Georgia), Jacksonville and Detroit.

Philanthropy

Beyond his journalistic achievements, Chauncy was known for his philanthropic work.

He founded the Chauncy Glover Project — a hands-on mentoring program aimed at empowering young men to become moral leaders in society.

The project successfully sent more than 350 Black and Latino youths from inner cities to college and mentored over 1,000 young men.
