In the aftermath of a tragic event involving the death of 18-year-old college student Sheridan Gorman, allegedly killed by an undocumented immigrant, the political landscape in Illinois has been rife with controversy. Filling the gap left by recent political maneuvers, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has stepped into the spotlight with a move that has stirred both support and criticism.
On Wednesday, Mayor Johnson hosted a press conference to reveal a newly named city snowplow. The plow, which will soon be clearing Chicago’s streets, bears the slogan “Abolish ICE”—a choice that emerged from a recent naming contest. Johnson introduced the snowplow with enthusiasm, highlighting the city’s commitment to justice and human rights, regardless of immigration status. “This name reflects Chicago’s legacy of standing up for justice, dignity, and the rights of everyone,” Johnson declared, standing proudly in front of a massive salt dome. He took the opportunity to reaffirm Chicago’s stance against the presence of ICE in the city, stating, “Chicago believes in abolishing ICE.”
During the event, a dissenting voice from the crowd interrupted, accusing Mayor Johnson of disregarding the damage caused by violent criminals who are in the country illegally. The man was quickly removed by security, but his point lingered—highlighting the mayor’s lack of commentary on the sanctuary-city policies implicated in Gorman’s tragic death, despite his vocal opposition to ICE operations in local airports.
To recall the incident, Sheridan Gorman was fatally shot last Thursday morning while she and her friends were searching for a vantage point to watch the Northern Lights along the Chicago waterfront. Jose Medina-Medina, a 25-year-old Venezuelan national without legal status in the U.S., was arrested and faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault with a firearm, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

When a man in the crowd shouted that Mayor Johnson was celebrating the harm caused by violent illegals, the truth-speaker was instantly escorted out of the event by security. It’s a valid point the man was making, especially when you consider Johnson has had plenty to say about the deployment of ICE agents to local airports – he’s “closely monitoring” the situation – but has quite cowardly avoided commenting on the sanctuary-city policies that led to the cold-blooded murder of Sheridan Gorman.
As RedState previously reported, Sheridan was shot and killed last Thursday morning while walking with friends along the Chicago waterfront; they were apparently looking for a good spot from which to view the Northern Lights. Jose Medina-Medina, a 25-year-old illegal from Venezuela, was later arrested for the crime and charged with one felony count of first-degree murder, one felony count of attempted first-degree murder, three felony counts of aggravated assault/discharge of a firearm, and one felony count of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon.
Medina-Medina entered the U.S. illegally in 2023, was released unsupervised into the country by the Biden administration, and was arrested for shoplifting later that year. Lax Democrat policies put him back on the street, where he was free to harm others.
