The appointment of a noncitizen – who cannot vote – to the San Francisco Elections Commission is a ‘big problem’ as China is playing the ‘long game’ to weaken the U.S., according to a top Republican senator.

Kelly Wong, an immigration rights activist and immigrant who came to the U.S. in 2019 from Hong Kong, was unanimously appointed by San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors to the city’s Elections Commission on February 14.

California voters approved a measure in 2020 to eliminate the citizenship requirement to serve on San Francisco boards – and Wong is believed to be the first noncitizen ever to sit on the commission.

Outspoken Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., called her unanimous appointment ‘unbelievable.’ 

‘These people view themselves as global citizens, they view our borders as arbitrary lines on a map. They think anybody should get here for any particular reason and be granted amnesty,’ Schmitt said in an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo.

He warned that President Xi Jinping is playing the ‘long game’ as 452 Chinese have been caught at the southern border in just the last three days, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sources.

‘Look they’re flooding our borders with fentanyl killing Americans,’ he said. ‘China is playing the long game here.’  

‘This is how civilizations, you know, ultimately lose their way and the idea of having an open border where anybody can come from anywhere without asking any questions is nuts.’ 

‘We need to do everything we can right now to sort of hold Mayorkas responsible and Joe Biden responsible.’

He referenced the House Republican vote to impeach Biden’s top border official Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas last week. 

The Senate is expected to receive the articles of impeachment by the end of the month, but there isn’t consensus on whether the Democrat-run body will hold a trial. 

Schmitt also touched on how China has implemented a forward-thinking approach to becoming the world’s foremost superpower. 

‘The problem now is they’ve completely populated the spaces that people make decisions, including the White House. So now we have this big problem.’ 

The San Francisco Elections Commission is comprised of seven residents that oversee and implement policy for the city’s Department of Elections. 

The department oversees voter registrations, vote by mail ballots, voting locations, election observation and additional functions surrounding the voting process.  

‘There are always voices inside my head. Like, ‘You can’t do it. You’re not competent. You’re an immigrant. This is not your country.’ That’s not true,’ Wong told local outlet KQED. 

‘If I can do it, you can do it,’ she added.

Wong hope to increase voting engagement in the city among immigrants and individuals who do not speak English. 

‘Even though I’m fluent in English, I still encounter challenges in navigating a new system, let alone participating in political conversation and activities,’ she said. 

‘I am deeply committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of immigration status, has a seat at the table in shaping the future of our city,’ she posted to on social media following her appointment.
