A FORMER football star was carried out of a council meeting after launching an anti-MAGA tirade in response to a city’s plans for a new library plaque.
Chris Kluwe, 43, hurled a litany of baseless claims about the MAGA movement at lawmakers in Huntington Beach, California, as he ripped the proposal.
The plaque would be installed at the Huntington Beach Central Library but has proved controversial over a particular acronym.
This is because it contains the letters MAGA.
In his tirade that has since been shared online, Kluwe claimed Trump’s MAGA movement is “corrupt” and said it stands for censorship and cutting funds in education.
Kluwe referred to the aviation disasters that have hit the US in recent weeks and the numerous government cuts that are taking place.
He also claimed the MAGA movement has links to the far-right.
After completing the anti-MAGA tirade, he walked over to where the lawmakers were sitting and put his hands behind his back.
“I will now engage in the time-honored American tradition of peaceful civil disobedience,” he said.
Cops swooped on the former football star and footage showed him being carried out of the chamber.
Kluwe, who played for the Minnesota Vikings between 2005 and 2012, spent around four hours in jail before being released.
He was charged with disrupting an assembly, per The Los Angeles Times.
The acronym on the plaque, which commemorates the 50th anniversary of the building, has proved divisive.
But, it does not stand for Make America Great Again.
Leaders have said this particular version of MAGA refers to Magical, Alluring, Galvanizing and Adventurous.
But, the use of the four letter acronym made famous by Trump has caused a stir.
This is despite the fact that design was approved by six votes to none.
PLAQUE BACKLASH
A flurry of locals emailed officials demonstrating their opposition.
Around 300 emails were sent expressing fury.
Natalie Moser, a former councilmember, claimed the plaque is “political propaganda,” as reported by The Los Angeles Times.
“They are not tools for political messaging, yet this plaque inserts division, exclusion, and control into a space meant to foster learning and unity,” she said.
“The use of a MAGA acrostic injects partisan ideology into a public institution that belongs to everyone, not just a political movement.”
Barbara Richardson, a local, ridiculed the placard.
She labeled the design “embarrassing” and she thought it was a joke at first.
“From far away, it looks like the plaque is celebrating 50 years of MAGA, as the word is dead center in the middle of the plaque,” she told the outlet.
“This is where one’s eye is drawn, to a political slogan.
“Are political slogans even allowed to be installed on city buildings?”
And the plaque has been subject to intense scrutiny on Reddit.
“The plaque seems politically motivated, aimed at swaying ideology, and boosting brand image of the presidency,” one critic said.
“HB has become a place to be avoided,” another claimed.
A third social media user said they would pay any penalties they would be handed for tearing it down.
