But his acceptance speech at the ceremony in Los Angeles was worthy of another award as, magnanimous in victory, Colin lavished praise on the make-up team for the TV series, and also paid tribute to rival, Andrew, nominated for TV series Ripley.

Recalling their first movie together, Drinking Crude, Colin said: “Andrew who I did my first film with 25, 30 years ago. You can’t even find it on Betamax. It doesn’t exist. But we go back that far.”

He also told Scottish actor Richard Gadd, who was nominated in the same category for Netflix hit series Baby Reindeer, that “you broke my heart with your work this year”.

Colin had initially started his acceptance speech joking he had “no one to thank” and “did it all by myself” in what was a “raw, paired down performance”, before lavishing praise on the show’s make-up and prosthetic team, who spent three hours each day fitting him with prosthetics to get him into character as Oswald Cobblepot.

He said: “In the morning, I drank black coffee, listened to 80s music, and I became a canvas for that team’s brilliance.”

He added: “Thank you for employing me. And yeah, I guess it’s prosthetics from here on out.”

Colin follows in the footsteps of Joaquin Phoenix, who won a Golden Globe in 2020 for his role in The Joker, and late actor Heath Ledger who also picked up the gong in 2009 for The Dark Knight.

And in the winners’ room, the Irish star heaped praise on both men.

Colin said: “For my money, the most extraordinary, talented, gifted and just brilliant artists in film that I’ve ever had the fortune to observe and be affected by.

“What Heath did in Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight was extraordinary, and will live on for future generations, and what Joaquin did with The Joker was as exemplified by all the awards that he won and the Oscar stuff. It was extraordinary.

“So to have your name thrown into – just uttered in the same sentence, as those performances, honestly, it’s lovely, but I still approach it all more from just a fan of it all. I don’t feel like I’m part of that pantheon, I don’t think I’ll go home tonight thinking I’m part of that pantheon.”

Colin picked up his own previous Golden Globe gongs for dark Irish comedies In Bruges and The Banshees Of Inisherin, both directed by Martin McDonagh.

Actress Demi Moore was one of the Golden Globes big winners in hte film section scooping best actress for her role in The Substance.

The 62-year-old gave an impassioned speech as she collected her first-ever Golden Globe award.

She told the audience how she had been “at a low point” before being cast in role.

She said the award was a celebration of “the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong”.
