Conservatives blast ‘sexist’ article on Casey DeSantis that likens her to meddling Lady Macbeth

A profile of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis‘ wife Casey has drawn backlash after the piece likened her to Lady Macbeth and accused her of personally choosing the firing of a key staffer, all as DeSantis prepares to run for president in 2024.

The Politico piece, titled ‘The Casey DeSantis Problem: ‘His Greatest Asset and His Greatest Liability,’ is drawing the ire of many who argue the mainstream media would never treat a Democrat politician’s wife so harshly.

The Michael Kruse article took its inspiration from none other than former Trump advisor Roger Stone once posting on Telegram: ‘Have you ever noticed … how much Ron DeSantis’ wife Casey is like Lady Macbeth?’

It takes it’s cues from there, arguing DeSantis’ wife is ‘unusually important and uncommonly involved’ in his political work, as well as his ‘most important advisor.’

The story even goes as far as explaining the plot of Shakespeare’s classic story and quoting it.

It then accuses her of being a problem for the popular Florida governor, re-elected by 20 points last fall, by limiting his inner circle ‘not only because he constitutionally doesn’t trust people but because she doesn’t either.’

‘She’s the power behind the throne,’ Kruse quotes one Republican lobbyist as saying. ‘The tip of the spear,’

Multiple sources criticized her anonymously for being behind the firing Susie Wiles, a political operative many credit with helping former President Trump and Governor DeSantis win Florida in 2016 and 2018. She is now running Trump’s 2022 campaign.

It then quotes an anonymous former DeSantis staffer who calls his former boss ‘a vindictive motherf***er’ and slanders Casey as ‘twice that.’

Many on Twitter were decrying how they felt the attacks were sexist and a double standard for conservative women.

Nate Hochman, a DeSantis speechwriter, pointed out that Politico previously published a piece just months earlier decrying ‘the Lady MacBeth trope’ against Jill Biden, Hillary Clinton and Gisele Fetterman.

‘Politico, November 2022: Comparing women in politics to Lady Macbeth is a sexist trope,’ he wrote. ‘Politico, May 2023: You know, come to think of it, there’s this one Shakespeare character that Casey DeSantis really reminds me of…’

Ross Douthat, the New York Times columnist, snarked at the use of the piece as an attack by ‘Never Trump’ organization The Lincoln Project.

‘The fascinating arc of history in which the founder of a ‘NeverTrump’ organization is touting a piece about Casey DeSantis organized around a Lady MacBeth analogy that’s based on a quote from, um, Roger Stone.’

Daily Signal reporter Mary Margaret Olohan put it more bluntly: ‘LOL at Politico comparing Casey DeSantis to Lady Macbeth, what is this??’

‘When activist media like @politico et al have no real access but want to push their narrative anyways about @GovRonDeSantis or @CaseyDeSantis, they quote liberal activists and pretend they’re insiders,’ Bryan Griffin, DeSantis’ press secretary, tweeted Friday.

Griffin’s predecessor Christina Pushaw responded: ‘FACT CHECK: True.’

The piece does give great credit to Florida’s First Lady, noting that she used her experience as a broadcast journalist to improve optics.

They even quote Representative Matt Gaetz, a former DeSantis ally now stumping for Trump in 2024, who said in 2021 that ‘I learned how to do my makeup from Ron DeSantis, and he learned from Casey.’

Others noted that they felt the Floridian First Lady was behind a change in pronunciation of the governor’s name, from ‘Dee-santis’ to ‘Duh-santis.’

It also that Trump himself has taken note of his wife’s great influence.

‘I know more about him than anybody other than perhaps his wife, who is really running his campaign,’

She served as his media strategist, putting to use her professional knowledge of optics. ‘I learned how to do my makeup from Ron DeSantis, and he learned from Casey,’ Rep. Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida, told me in 2021.

DeSantis is already trying to run on Florida’s record following the end of the legislative session, touting its low unemployment rate and comparing it favorably Friday to New York’s.

In other comments Friday, DeSantis tore into ‘woke’ culture on campus, and said his Florida has ‘got moxie,’ riffing on a magazine piece about his state as he prepares to champion his home state with a launch in Miami.

‘Basically they said, you know, it’s the free state of Florida where woke is broke, where men are men and where business is booming,’ he said.

‘And I’m like, you know what? That’s not a bad slogan.’

Trump leads DeSantis by 56 to 19.9 in the latest RealClearPolitics average.

That lead has only grown since Trump was found liable for sexual abuse in the E. Jean Carroll trial while still facing a federal January 6 and federal documents probe, a New York trial related to his business, and a Georgia probe of his election overturn effort there.

Trump led DeSantis 42-22 in New Hampshire in a UNH poll released last month.

Trump visited the same Manchester diner three weeks ago, where a crowd developed both outside and inside. Back in 2016, when he made an appearance there, an exiting patron yelled ‘Enjoy your burger, racist!’ while he was dining.
