TWO American cruise passengers sadly drowned hours apart at a newly opened Caribbean resort.
The tragic incidents happened at Carnival’s private Bahamas resort on Friday.
Officials told the New York Post that the “water emergency incidents” involved guests travelling on two different ships.
The drownings happened at Celebration Key on Grand Bahama Island.
“Carnival lifeguards and medical teams working at the resort responded to both incidents, one occurring in the lagoon and the other at the beach,” a spokesperson said.
The passengers are reported to be a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman, both of whom are American nationals.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force has now opened an investigation into the deaths.
The man had been snorkeling at the beach when he became unresponsive, according to reports.
It happened just before noon on August 15, according to officials.
A lifeguard rushed to his aid and brought him back to shore where CPR was administered.
But he was sadly pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
The second incident happened at around 2.30pm, when the woman was found unresponsive in a swimming pool.
Autopsies are being carried out on both passengers.
The tragic incidents happened less than a month after the luxury resort opened its doors on July 19.
Carnival was contacted by The Sun for comment.
A company spokesperson told Cruise Fever: “Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate water emergency incidents at Celebration Key on Friday — one in the lagoon and one at the beach.
“Sadly, both guests have passed away.
“One guest was sailing with family on Mardi Gras and one guest was sailing with family on Carnival Elation.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families and our Care Team is providing assistance.”
Celebration Key, dubbed the “Key to Paradise”, is an exclusive destination available for Carnival guests.
It boasts 275,000 square foot lagoons and an 11,000 square foot infinity pool.
Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy previously said: “Celebration Key is more than just a beautiful place; it’s a celebration of the Bahamian paradise our guests love, complemented by an impressive variety of incredible new experiences and offerings.
“We’ve built the ultimate beach day for our guests whether they crave fun in the sun or relaxation under a palm tree.”
