Emergency crews rushed to the scene at the intersection of Bourbon Steet and Iberville in the city’s French Quarter neighbourhood at around 3.15am.

Police have so far confirmed one death – but it is feared the toll could be as high as 10.

Bourbon Steet – a major nightlife spot – has been shut down while cops investigate.

A man who witnessed the horror while on the street with his wife said he saw an SUV “speeding and running people over”.

It comes days after five were killed and a further 205 injured after a doctor drove his car into crowds at a German Christmas market.

A child of nine was among the dead after Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, 50, ploughed his BMW into revellers at the crowded market in the city of Magdeburg on December 20.

A mother of three and an elderly couple were also among those killed.

It has emerged that Saudi Arabia repeatedly alerted German police about their citizen al-Abdulmohsen, living in Germany since 2006.

Four months before the attack, he wrote online in Arabic: “I assure you: if Germany wants war, we will have it. If Germany wants to kill us, we will slaughter them, die.”

He wrote: “Is there a path to justice without slaughtering German citizens indiscriminately?” It was unclear if police acted upon the warnings.

In 2023 al-Abdulmohsen asked 48,000 followers on X: “Would you blame me if I randomly killed 20 Germans because of what Germany is doing against the Saudi opposition?”

A woman reported the now deleted post but it was unclear if police took any action.
