In a recent report, CBS News highlighted the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts, revealing findings from an internal Department of Homeland Security document. It showed that out of nearly 400,000 immigrants detained by ICE during Trump’s first year back in office, less than 14% faced charges or convictions for violent crimes.
The CBS report further noted, “Almost 60% of those arrested by ICE in the past year had criminal charges or convictions. However, most of these charges or convictions were not for violent offenses.”
Responding to this characterization, DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin pointed out that serious offenses such as drug trafficking, distribution of child pornography, burglary, fraud, DUI, embezzlement, solicitation of a minor, and human smuggling fall under the category of ‘non-violent crimes.’ Despite this classification, these crimes remain severe and troubling.
But as DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin observed in response, “Drug trafficking, Distribution of child pornography, burglary, fraud, DUI, embezzlement, solicitation of a minor, human smuggling are all categorized as ‘non-violent crimes.’” Yet they are obviously still very heinous crimes.
