A MASSIVE rescue operation is underway after a tractor trailer cab crashed off the Delaware Memorial Bridge and plunged into the water below.
The early morning crash has triggered lane closures and is expected to cause delays for commuters heading into the weekend.
It happened shortly before 4 am Friday on the southbound side of the bridge leading into Delaware.
Officials say the vehicle involved was a Bobtail Tractor, a semi-truck cab without a trailer.
Authorities confirmed the vehicle crossed three lanes of traffic on the downslope before smashing through a concrete wall.
The impact tore a large hole in the barrier and sent the cab flying into the Delaware River.
No other cars were involved in the dramatic crash, officials said.
The number of people inside the cab remains unknown.
Search and rescue teams were seen in the area shortly after the incident.
Multiple dive teams have entered the water as they search for any occupants and the submerged vehicle.
The United States Coast Guard is assisting in the operation.
The left lane on the bridge has been shut down as the search and investigation continue.
Authorities have not released any information about the condition of the driver or whether any bodies have been recovered.
It’s also unclear what caused the truck to veer across multiple lanes and crash through the wall.
