A DELTA flight has been diverted after a passenger reportedly brought a banned item onto the plane that caused a fire.
Fire crews stormed the cabin after passengers screamed as smoke clouded their seats while they were zooming through the skies.
Delta confirmed that flight 1334, which was a Boeing 757 traveling from Atlanta, Georgia, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Monday, was diverted because of a battery fire.
“Flight attendants worked quickly to extinguish a probably burning personal battery belonging to a customer while pilots followed procedures to safely divert the flight,” a spokesperson told USA Today.
The plane was abruptly landed at Southwest Florida International Airport where first responders were waiting to make sure everyone was safe.
One passenger filmed a now-viral video capturing the moment firefighters in full suits walked down the aisles as flyers remained in their seats.
“We have to wait for the fire department to clear the plane,” the TikToker said in the post.
She explained that she was asleep when she was woken up by people screaming “fire fire fire.”
“I turned around, it’s pure smoke,” she said.
“They had to use fire extinguishers.”
Delta didn’t share any details about the cause, but a pilot was heard speculating that the passenger had brought a lithium battery, according to radio recordings heard by CNN.
Most items that use lithium batteries are allowed on planes, but the Transportation Security Administration has banned portable chargers and power banks using the batteries from checked luggage.
The crackdown came after a power bank caused a fire on an international flight in January while travelers were boarding in South Korea.
Flyers had to evacuate, and the Air Busan plane was completely destroyed in the blaze, prompting new restrictions on the items.
