Shocking bodycam footage captured the moment a Democratic lawmaker stumbled and slurred his way through a failed sobriety test.
Rep. Aundre Bumgardner, 30, a Democrat serving in the Connecticut House of Representatives, was arrested on Sunday after he was allegedly caught driving under the influence.
The lawmaker was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving, according to Fox News, after failing a standard walk and turn test four times.
At one stage during his stumbling performance, Bumgardner turns to an officer and says: ‘I’m sorry sir, I’m not much of a balancer.’
In a statement, Bumgardner acknowledged the arrest, saying: ‘I take full responsibility for my actions and deeply regret this mistake. I am grateful that no one was harmed and that no accident occurred.
‘I recognize the seriousness of this situation and am committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure it never happens again. To my family, friends, colleagues, and the residents of the 41st District, whom I am honored to serve, I sincerely apologize for my actions and the disappointment I have caused.’
When Bumgardner was pulled over by cops, he initially told officers he had ‘struck something’ on the road.
He said he had not been drinking and was returning home from an ‘event’ with constituents, and the police report noted that he ‘appeared to be very nervous.’
Although Bumgardner claimed he had not been drinking, the police report noted that his eyes were ‘red and glossy’, and there was a ‘strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath as he spoke.’
The officers also said in their report of the arrest that the rep ‘had a slight slur in his speech.’
Bumgardner’s vehicle had a flat front tire that was ‘barely staying on the rim’, and soon after officers ordered him out of the car he was seen stumbling around the road.
Bodycam footage of the incident showed Bumgardner appear to struggle to understand instructions from officers, and the report stated that he made four attempts to complete a standard ‘walk and turn’ test, which he failed.
At the same time that Bumgardner was stumbling through the test, a woman, later identified as his wife Kayla Reasco, slept in the backseat of his car.
After several failed attempts at placing one foot in front of the other, the lawmaker was heard telling the officer: ‘I’m sorry sir, I’m not much of a balancer.’
Bumgardner was then arrested and taken to the Groton Police Department, while officers took his wife home.
Once in custody, Bumgardner was seen in the bodycam footage pointing to an officer’s camera and saying it ‘felt very invasive to him.’
The police report, first shared by Fox News, noted that the rep was seemingly evasive when asked to sign paperwork in the station.
The 30-year-old’s mugshot showed him appearing to have glossy, red eyes, as per the police report.
He was eventually released after being handcuffed in the station, his license was revoked for 24 hours, and he was handed a court date next week.
Soon after Bumgardner’s arrest, State Rep. Matt Ritter, the speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives, said the lawmaker had been removed from his leadership positions and committee assignments ‘until further notice.’
‘I am disappointed and disheartened after hearing of Rep. Bumgardner’s arrest for driving under the influence,’ Ritter said in a statement.
‘I have spoken with Aundré, and he understands that he must take full responsibility and work every day to win back the trust of his constituents and colleagues.
‘Aundré is a dedicated and compassionate young man, and it is clear from talking to him that he is owning this very serious mistake.’
Bumgardner had served as the assistant majority leader of the House Democratic caucus in the Connecticut legislature, and was a member of the Finance, Environment, Energy and Transportation committees.
Bumgardner’s office did not immediately respond to a request for further comment when contacted by DailyMail.com.
