In a recent statement to Breitbart News, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) accused Democrats of opposing the SAVE America Act because, in his words, “they want to make it easy to cheat in our elections.” This proposed legislation, formally known as the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act, seeks to introduce stricter voter identification requirements. If enacted, individuals would need to present a U.S. passport or birth certificate to register to vote and provide photo ID at polling stations.
The bill, which has gained the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, successfully passed the U.S. House of Representatives last week. Its passage was largely along party lines, with only one Democrat, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), crossing the aisle to support it.
However, the path ahead in the Senate is expected to be more challenging. To overcome a filibuster, the act requires a 60-vote majority. Currently, Republicans claim to have the backing of 50 senators, but Democrats have expressed their intent to block the legislation.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has strongly criticized the act, labeling it as “Jim Crow 2.0.” In a discussion with MS NOW’s Morning Joe, Schumer argued that Republicans are attempting to replicate historical tactics used in the South to disenfranchise voters of color, thereby preventing them from exercising their right to vote.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) argued that the act is “Jim Crow 2.0,” telling MS NOW’s Morning Joe viewers that Republicans are trying to do “the same thing that was done in the South for decades to prevent people of color from voting.”
Cotton, chair of the Senate Republican Conference, blasted Schumer’s insulting take on social media:
“Let’s call it like it is: Chuck Schumer opposes voter ID because he wants to make it easy to commit voter fraud,” he wrote on X.
In an exclusive statement to Breitbart News, Cotton reiterated that the Democrats are working against election security.
“Senate Democrats oppose voter ID for one reason: they want to make it easy to cheat in our elections. Almost every American supports voter ID and there’s no excuse to stop it.”
Despite claims by Schumer and other Democrats that voter ID is somehow racist, a Pew Research Center survey shows that it is overwhelmingly popular amongst Americans of different ethnicities, including black and Latino voters:
