Los Angeles prosecutors will reportedly not pursue the death penalty against Nick Reiner in the alleged killings of his parents, a decision sources say reflects Rob and Michele Reiner’s long-held opposition to executions.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman is declining to seek capital punishment in the case in part because Rob and Michele Reiner were strongly opposed to the death penalty, according to TMZ .
A source familiar with Hochman’s thinking said the couple’s other children, Jake and Romy Reiner, were also taken into account as prosecutors weighed the potential punishment.
While Jake and Romy are not supporting their brother’s case or helping finance his legal defense, the source said they would have faced an especially difficult sentencing process had execution remained a possible outcome.
Reiner, 33, is accused of stabbing Rob and Michele Reiner to death on December 14, 2025.
He has entered not-guilty pleas to two murder charges, which include special-circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder committed by lying in wait.
He is scheduled to return to court later today for a pretrial hearing.
Another hearing set for next month will focus on Reiner’s request to use a $1.5 million trust fund to cover the costs of his defense.

Rob and Michele Reiner were allegedly killed by their son Nick on December 14 at their Brentwood mansion.
Reiner was arrested after his parents’ bloodied bodies were discovered at their home in the affluent Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Rob Reiner, 79, who directed huge hits including When Harry Met Sally and A Few Good Men, and his wife, Michele Singer, 70, had been stabbed to death.
Nick Reiner, who has a history of addiction, lived in a guest house on his parents’ property.
He had attended a party at the home of comedian Conan O’Brien on December 13 with his parents, where some attendees reportedly said he had behaved erratically.
Reiner, who just celebrated his 33rd birthday on Monday, was indicted by a Los Angeles grand jury in August.
The indictment accuses him of two counts of first-degree murder with additional special circumstances of multiple murders and lying in wait.
It also includes the special allegation that he personally used a deadly weapon.
The charges in the indictment superseded the previous ones that were filed over the December 2025 double slaying.
Special circumstances allegations can also increase potential penalties during the sentencing phase.

Hochman, after the indictment was unsealed last month, said: ‘This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing.
‘The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait.
‘We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.’
Reiner in June filed a petition demanding access to a $1.5 million trust fund set up by the parents he is charged with murdering, court documents show.
The 136-page petition filed in Los Angeles says Reiner should have begun receiving the money two years ago, and his inability to access it left him unable to pay the expensive attorney who had originally represented him after his arrest over the December stabbing of his mother and father.
‘Nick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths,’ the petition stated. ‘But the facts about what did and did not happen to them are not at issue in this trust litigation.’
Reiner is one of three children that Rob and Michele had together. Rob also adopted a child during his first marriage.
According to the June petition, the trust was one of three set up for the couple’s children with ‘unambiguous instructions’ as part of an estate plan established in 1993.

Reiner should have received half of the money when he turned 30, with the other half available to him five years later, the petition stated.
His attorneys said the awards are mandatory and unconditional.
‘They were a commitment by Nick’s parents, in the most binding way the law of trusts allows, that these resources would belong to Nick for his use and benefit,’ the petition alleged.
Reiner was originally represented by celebrity attorney Alan Jackson, who left the case a short time later. The petition says Reiner’s inability to access the trust money meant he could not pay the lawyer.
Rob Reiner, the son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, started his showbiz career in acting.
He won fame as the oafish son-in-law Michael ‘Meathead’ Stivic on groundbreaking 1970s sitcom All in the Family, before transitioning to directing.
As a director, his output included classic films like 1984’s rock music mockumentary This is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride from 1987, and seminal coming-of-age movie Stand By Me.
