DUOLINGO users have brilliantly fired back at the app – after it took a bold swipe at their reasons for using it.

The language learning app recently delivered year-end wrap ups for its users, detailing how they had performed over the past 12 months.

It played into the popularity the more famous 2023 Spotify Wrapped, which recaps the year’s music choices of Spotify listeners.

But while urging users to check their app for an annual review, Duolingo joked on social media what the roundups “should be saying” really.

“You spent 420,000 minutes this year gaslighting yourself into thinking if you became fluent in Spanish he’d stay,” Duo wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The cheeky remark seemed to suggest learners were only working on their language skills to maintain the interests a foreign lover – to which users brilliantly fired back.

“Oh my God Duo chill,” one user wrote.

“Honestly no,” Duo responded to which the poster simply replied: “Oh.”

“And what if I’m learning Spanish for myself?” someone else said.

“It’s ok, sometimes I’m delulu too,” Duo wrote back.

“Who’s learning a new language for a man? Could never be me,” a third, called Marj, wrote.

“Marj some of us have made mistakes,” Duo quipped.

Duo, the app’s owl mascot, usually cheers users on as they progress through their language lessons.

The character is also how the app reminds users to complete their daily lessons, which has led users to post online about the humorous, vaguely threatening daily notifications.

Many users responded to the online post with their own Duolingo scores and tagged the app’s account.

“It’s saying this [referencing being named a top 1% language learner], I don’t think it’s too bad (please don’t hurt me),” one user jokingly posted.

“You’re safe (for now),” Duo responded.

“Are you proud of me?” another user asked the owl after they posted their status of being in the top 4% of language learners on Duolingo.

“Extremely (only today tho),” Duo said.

“Will try my best to make you proud everyday,” the poster responded.

Another user posted their Spotify Wrapped that said they were in the top 0.001% of fans for musician Tate McRae captioning the picture “mine is better.”

“Is it tho?” Duo snarked.

Duo played into that during the pandemic and has since become popular for his tongue-in-cheek social media presence.

The app has amassed over 8 million followers on TikTok, where he is notorious for making funny videos that often calls out users for not using the app enough.
