Former FBI Director Comey Now Faces Federal Trial

Charlie Kirk’s repeated warnings about former FBI Director James Comey are taking on new significance following Comey’s federal indictment on charges of making false statements and obstruction of justice, underscoring years of Kirk’s denunciations before his assassination earlier this month.

Charlie Kirk, the Turning Point USA founder who was fatally shot while delivering a speech at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025, used his social media accounts in the years leading up to his death to expose former FBI Director James Comey, often accusing him of misconduct tied to investigations of President Donald Trump. In posts dating back to 2019, Kirk called for Comey’s impeachment for what he described as “creating a coup against Trump” and labeled him “the most corrupt FBI Director” during the Obama administration.

One post from January 2020 compared Comey to actor Jussie Smollett, alleging both had “created fake narratives to try and destroy Donald Trump” and “avoided criminal charges.” That same month, Kirk pointed to a Justice Department probe into leaks of classified intelligence related to the Russia investigation, remarking, “Their focus? Disgraced former FBI Director Jim Comey. How many times does he have to be exposed as a liar & a leaker before he faces justice?” In February 2020, he listed Comey alongside other former officials as evidence of what he referred to as “two tiers of justice in America,” and in May 2020 urged followers to retweet if they believed Comey should be prosecuted for his actions regarding General Michael Flynn, a post that drew more than 27,000 retweets.

In May 2025, Kirk again took aim at Comey after the former FBI director posted a photo of the number “8647” spelled out with shells and rocks on a beach. Kirk mocked the post as “cringe” and later wrote that the “whole 8647 charade was all just a cynical ploy to sell books.” Comey first disabled comments on the Instagram post before deleting it after it was interpreted as a call to violence. On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he contended that the image came from a beach walk with his wife, Patrice, who associated the number with her past work as a restaurant server.

Kirk’s long-running condemnations gained renewed attention this month after Comey was indicted on one count of making false statements and one count of obstruction of justice. According to NBC News, the charges stem from Comey’s September 30, 2020, Senate Judiciary Committee testimony in which he maintained he had not authorized leaks about the FBI’s investigations into Trump or former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. A Justice Department inspector general’s report later stated Comey’s deputy, Andrew McCabe, said Comey authorized him to leak information to the press.

Following the indictment, Comey posted a video declaring he was “not afraid” and ready to go to trial, asserting his innocence and encouraging viewers to “vote like your beloved country depends upon it.” Senior White House adviser Peter Navarro told Breitbart News that Comey was “the mastermind or the useful idiot” behind the Russia Collusion Hoax and called for accountability, tying the indictment to what he identified as a broader pattern of targeting conservatives and Trump allies.

President Donald Trump responded to Comey’s indictment by saying he hoped “others” who “weaponized the Justice Department” would also be held accountable. In a separate Truth Social post, he emphasized that Comey lied and dubbed him a “Dirty Cop,” writing, “He knew exactly what he was saying, and that it was a very serious and far reaching lie for which a very big price must be paid!”

Navarro, who co-authored I Went to Prison So You Won’t Have To with his fiancée, Bonnie Brenner, tied Kirk’s killing to what he called a climate of political violence, stating at a Breitbart Fight Club event that “we just had one of the great men in America assassinated” and arguing that “the sixth stage of grief” must be accountability. In his remarks, Navarro again linked Comey to the Steele Dossier and the Russia investigation, saying that without consequences “they’re going to do it again and again and again.”

Kirk’s final months included warnings about what he termed an “assassination culture” in American politics. In April, he cited polling showing large numbers of liberals agreeing that violence against high-profile figures could be justified. His assassination on September 10 came after he posted multiple times about the Charlotte light rail killing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, focusing on the suspect’s criminal record and criticizing media coverage for racial bias in headlines, downplaying of the crime’s racial dynamics, and commentary such as Van Jones’ claim that white people have a “virus in their brain.

On September 17, a 2017 post in which he wrote “Jimmy Kimmel isn’t funny” resurfaced as ABC and Disney pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the host’s comments on Kirk’s assassination, which President Trump hailed as the right decision.

Even after Charlie Kirk’s death, his words continue to resonate in national debate.
